In 697, Du Zhenyan changed his post to Luoyang Cheng and returned to luoyang, the eastern capital of his heart. However, only a year later, he was demoted to join the army from Hachipinyoshi Prefecture.
We do not know the specific reason for Du Ziang's depreciation, but from Chen Ziang's farewell essay for him, "Preface to sending Du Sihu to Jizhou for trial", it can be speculated that it may be because of his words.
Combined with the situation in the imperial court at that time, 698 was the year when Wu Zetian was worried about whether to make his son a prince or a nephew as a prince, and Du Zhenyan, as Luoyang Cheng, was likely to have participated in the struggle of Li Si, and it was difficult to say something that should not be said.
Du Zhenyan went to Jizhou, far from the political center but not away from the imperial court struggle. He somehow offended the local officials and was framed by Sima Zhou Jizhong of Jizhou in collusion with Guo Ruoner, a foreign minister, and convicted of a capital offense.

But after all, his son killed the chief, although the righteous act was not tolerated by the law, so Du Zhenyan was dismissed from his official post.
After three years of idleness, Du Zhenyan was recalled by Wu Zetian to Luoyang and served as a writer. In the following years, he served as a literary attendant, and during this period he composed many poems.
