Teng Wengong (滕文公), surnamed Ji (姬), was a descendant of King Wen of Zhou and a monarch of the State of Teng in the middle of the Warring States period. When he was in power, the small country that was "only fifty miles long" was not annexed by a big country under the circumstances of "eight hundred princes and seven warring states competing for hegemony", but on the contrary, "Xinjiang is a good country, outstanding above the twelve princes of Sishang", known as a "good country", and wrote the most glorious page in the history of Teng Xiaoguo.

Teng Wengong

Teng Guo, when Teng Wengong was in power, did not change much compared with when his father was in power, and the reason why he won the reputation of "good country" was mainly because he had the ambition of not being willing to fall behind, striving for strength and survival, and the spirit of being good at learning and knowing practice. When he was still the son of the world, he actively explored the way to govern the country and used every opportunity to ask for advice on the strategy of a rich country. He sent an envoy to the State of Chu, heard that Mencius was in the State of Song, and twice asked Mencius for advice on how to govern the country when he was passing through Pengcheng, the capital of the State of Song, on his way back to China. Mencius encouraged him: "Now that Teng teng is absolutely strong enough to complement his weaknesses, he will be able to make fifty miles a good country." Mencius was a master of Confucianism at that time, and Wengong was taught by him to strengthen his confidence in governing the Teng state as a good country.

Mencius

After teng Dinggong's death, Duke Wen immediately sent a friend to Zou to ask Mencius for advice on funeral rites. Mencius taught to practice "three years of mourning". However, because the funeral was long abandoned, it was opposed by hundreds of officials. He sent a friend to ask Mencius, and Mencius said, "However, he cannot ask for it." Therefore, Teng Wengong was determined to mourn according to the "three-year mourning", so he spread it among the princes in the name of filial piety.

After Teng Wen took the throne, he hired Mencius to Teng. "Mencius's Teng, the museum in the upper museum", Wengong asked Mencius for advice on the way to govern the country, and asked Mencius to give a lecture, which was listened to by many people and had a great influence. Wen Gong and Mencius: "Teng, Xiao Guoye; between Qi Chu, things Qi Hu? What's the matter? Mencius said, "Teng, a small country, is also a small country; if you try your best to do something to be a big country, you must not be spared." "Advocate not relying on a certain big country, as long as the implementation of benevolent government, the country can be rich and the people are strong, and stand in an invincible position."

Teng Wengong and Mencius

After Wen Gong consulted with the hundred officials, he repeatedly consulted with the hundred officials and decided to follow Mencius's proposition that "the government is in the hands of the people". "The King of the Fa Xian", "Practice benevolent government", "Shi Shan Jiao", reform the tax system, etc. Soon Teng Guo's reputation was greatly enhanced, and people near and far called Wen Gong "Xianjun", which was called "the government of a saint", and there was an endless stream of people who voluntarily came to settle. Xu Xing of the Chu state studied the Shennong doctrine and was one of the more influential figures in the peasant families of the pre-Qin dynasty.

He led ten of his disciples to the Teng Kingdom and said to Wen Gong, "I am a distant Chu national, and Wen Junxing Renzheng voluntarily came here to settle down for the people, please take them in." Wengong agreed to his request and gave him housing. Xu Xing and others wore coarse cloth clothes and made a living by weaving hemp shoes, straw shoes, and mats. Chen Liang, a disciple of Chen Xiang of the Song Dynasty, and his brother Xin came to Teng Guo with a plough on their backs to ask for a settlement, and said to Wen Gong: "Wen Jun practices the government of the saints." Yes also saints also. May it be a people of saints. Since then, the teng people have prospered, the country has become rich and the people are strong, and the name of the virtuous king and the "good country" has been far and wide.
