The road of "medicine" is arduous, and there are no regrets for public welfare

This year is the fifth year that Liu Changbao has retired from his medical post, and after retirement, he has not been idle, but has started charity and public welfare undertakings in the public welfare association.

Liu Changbao, born in 1959 in a rural family in Jianchi Town, Hanyin County, Ankang City, graduated from junior high school at the age of 14, and was elected to the village cooperative medical room as a "barefoot doctor". Due to the limited medical conditions at that time, the seriously ill people around him would die because they could not get effective treatment, and it became his lifelong pursuit and dream to be a doctor with superb medical skills, and at the age of 17, he entered the Ankang Health School under the recommendation of the village party branch.

From "barefoot doctor" to health director

During his studies, he did not forget the expectations of the village party branch and the village committee, and often thought in his heart: "I must succeed in my studies, be a good doctor in the future, and repay the society well." At the age of 19, Liu Changbao graduated from the Ankang Health School, and at the time of the high incidence of endemic thyroid cysts in the county, he signed up for the endemic disease treatment medical team organized by the county. "At that time, the work location of the medical team was very uncertain, and the team I followed was in Pingliang District, which had jurisdiction over 10 townships at that time, with a large number of people and heavy tasks, but the most important thing was that there were many people who did not understand the state's policies and avoided or even refused to be treated. Liu Changbao recalled.

Thyroid cyst surgery was the first operation performed by Liu Changbao in the medical team. There is no surgical light, so they connect the wires and hang the light bulbs by themselves, and there is no anesthesiologist, so the team members are required to study hard.

The road of "medicine" is arduous, and there are no regrets for public welfare

In his early years, Liu Changbao strengthened his self-study during the night shift

In the face of the huge workload every day, he gave up his rest time and took the initiative to come to the home of a patient who needed surgery to explain in detail how to prevent thyroid cysts and the benefits after surgery.

Soon, the medical team was disbanded, and Liu Changbao signed up for the county's health recruitment examination, and was officially assigned to the Jianchi Town Central Health Center with the first place, becoming an "official" doctor. During his work in Jianchi Town Health Center, because of his medical experience in the medical team, his first thought was to continuously strengthen self-learning, and only by learning medical skills well could he treat patients' diseases more effectively and make them recover as soon as possible.

"As soon as I arrived at the hospital, I was sent to Xi'an for further study, and I was inspired by the instructors in the big hospital, and I had an idea in my heart that I should always strengthen my studies. Liu Changbao said. After returning to work, he spontaneously organized and mobilized young doctors and nurses in the hospital to hold training courses, arranging them to study intensively in the evening every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and taking turns to give lectures on Tuesday and Thursday. In other words, he effectively improved the level of local medical services when the departments were incomplete and there was a lack of various facilities and equipment. In 1986, due to his outstanding work performance, Liu Changbao was selected as the director of the Pingliang District Health Center, responsible for coordinating the health and family planning work of the ten townships under the jurisdiction of the district at that time.

For more than 20 years, he has trained more than 3,000 students for Ankang

"Before I came here, my father once told me that the more humble the conditions, the more the patients need you, you should treat the patients well, and don't forget the original intention of the doctor when you become the director. Liu Changbao said.

Once, a patient in Xinglong Village, Pingliang Town, had severe stomach pain, and Liu Changbao rushed to the hospital at 1 a.m. to perform a cholecystectomy on the patient. Because the patient's family had no money, and the stomach hurt for several days, resulting in suppuration of the common bile duct, severe abdominal pain, high fever, chills, nausea and vomiting and other symptoms, he did not hesitate to organize the doctor on duty in the hospital to operate on the patient, and after 8 hours of intense rescue, the patient turned the corner.

After this experience of rescuing patients, Liu Changbao realized that the health center only has three business departments: internal medicine, surgery, and inpatient department, which is far from meeting the needs of the masses for medical treatment. "If there are conditions, if there are no conditions, we must also create conditions. It was this imminent experience of rescuing patients that made him realize the importance of establishing various departments under that conditions. From that day on, he drew on the hospital management methods when he was studying in Xi'an, and divided the hospital's business departments into internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and other departments. When the department was short of staff, he encouraged the medical staff in the hospital to go out for further training, and when there was no equipment, he raised money to buy facilities and equipment.

Liu Changbao instructed the village level to do a good job in basic public health work

During this period, Liu Changbao led by example, caring for colleagues and patients, and demanding himself as an ordinary medical worker. During the day, he is a doctor, working between inpatient and outpatient departments. In the evenings, he is a dean, working overtime to deal with the administrative affairs of the health center. His dedication was recognized by colleagues and patients, and in 1988 he was awarded the honorary title of Advanced Director of Shaanxi Provincial Health Center. At the health center, Liu Changbao wrote a party application to the party organization and joined the Communist Party of China. At that time, he had already obtained the title of attending physician, and when there was a shortage of teachers at Hanyin Health School, he did not hesitate to go to Hanyin Health School as a part-time teacher, teaching internal medicine, preventive medicine and other subjects at that time.

In 1995, Liu Changbao served as the principal of Hanyin County Health School, and it was also the eighth year that he stood on the "three-foot podium", and in these eight years, he has been silently telling himself in his heart: "For medicine, we must save lives and help the wounded; for teachers, we must teach and educate people; my main purpose is to teach students well and cultivate more medical talents for the local area." "With excellent teaching experience, in the past 20 years of teaching time, a total of more than 3,000 students have been trained for Ankang counties. A point of hard work, a point of harvest, his hard work makes every student grateful in the heart, that is, his simple, serious work attitude, in 2002 he won the honorary title of advanced individual in vocational education in Shaanxi Province.

Adhere to the "benevolence of doctors" and move forward firmly

In 2008, after the restructuring of Hanyin Health School, because he had not worked in medical treatment for many years, Liu Changbao took the initiative to request that his job be adjusted to an administrative post and assigned to the Hanyin County Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Soon after reporting to the Disease Control Center, he was seconded by the County Health and Family Planning Bureau to engage in the post-earthquake reconstruction of 18 township health centers, the county's chronic disease and health education management projects, and presided over the compilation of the "Hanyin County Health Journal" under the guidance of the County Health and Family Planning Bureau. Speaking of this, Liu Changbao was a little deep. He sighed: "I am not bothered by the assignment of positions, but I feel that my time in each position is too short, and if the time can be longer, I can also make different achievements."

"His sense of responsibility and professionalism is highly commendable, always putting the interests of patients, colleagues and students first. This is the most pertinent evaluation of him by most people in the health system of Hanyin County. Due to his dedication, after retiring in 2019, he was rehired by the Hanyin County Maternal and Child Health Hospital to serve as the director of the primary health care department of the hospital, and took on the county's maternal and child health management and public health services in 4 streets and 4 villages in the urban area until 2022.

With the improvement of people's ideological realm, Liu Changbao after retirement bred the idea of doing charity and public welfare in his mind, he was engaged in public health service work for several years after retirement, and felt that the village and community doctors have long provided free services for public health and chronic disease patients in the jurisdiction, and it is a strong charity and public welfare force. With the joint efforts of everyone, the Hanyin County Angel Love Public Welfare Association was established in August 2021, and he volunteered to serve as the honorary president, and let the young and promising village doctor be the president and vice president. On the day of its establishment, the association received donations of more than 80,000 yuan from caring people, providing financial support for the association to carry out public welfare activities.

After his retirement, Liu Changbao served as a public welfare volunteer for public health check-ups

In the three years since the establishment of the Angel Love Public Welfare Association, it has always carried forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation of "being kind and benevolent, helping the needy", and has been committed to public welfare activities such as disaster relief and protests, voluntary blood donation and health education. In the volunteer service activities, he took the initiative to plan the activity plan in combination with the focus of each stage, guided the volunteers to actively participate in the volunteer service activities, and took caring for the vulnerable groups and serving the society as his own responsibility, and successively organized and carried out the "health escort for front-line sanitation workers", "love for village doctors, love overflowing Chongyang", "big hands holding small hands, caring for left-behind children in mountainous areas", and "helping students in distress to dream of college" and other volunteer service activities, giving full play to the resource advantages of cultivating more students during the work of the health school, recruiting more than 380 volunteers, and organizing members to donate more than 20 yuan for volunteer service and poverty alleviation activities.

Today's Liu Changbao, although he is no longer as light and agile as he used to be, still adheres to his "benevolence of a doctor", still moves forward firmly along the road of love, actively devotes himself to charity and public welfare, weaves life with great love, and practices the volunteer spirit with action.
