When it comes to the concept of wireless charging, the first thing that probably comes to mind is smartphones. Many mobile phone manufacturers (such as Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.) have regarded it as an important marketing point.

For example, in the context of the very sluggish smartphone market last year, in the third quarter of last year, the number of smartphones that support wireless charging in the world increased by 2% year-on-year, and the proportion of all smartphones in the market has exceeded 26%, directly setting a new record.

In the capital market, wireless charging has ushered in a bottoming rebound since the beginning of February this year. For a period of time, the sector index directly rose for 9 consecutive years, which warmed the hearts of many investors.

Unlike wireless charging technology, which has been relatively mature in mobile phones, its use in new energy vehicles has become something that many automakers want to land. Although it is still in the early stages of commercialization, there are already players who have begun to try eating crabs. For example, JiHu recently announced in a high-profile manner that it will mass-produce wireless charging technology in 2025 to push car charging to the wireless track.

So, many car owners have been looking forward to the long-awaited wireless charging, can it really begin to be popularized on a large scale?

1. Become a dark horse?

The development of new energy vehicles has been in full swing in recent years, and how to replenish the energy of the car has become one of the most important issues for manufacturers to consider. However, the emergence of wireless charging may become a dark horse in the field of energy supplementation.

To put it simply, the basic principle of wireless charging is electromagnetic induction, which transmits electrical energy over the air. The wireless charging system of the car generally includes two parts: the ground transmitter and the on-board receiver. The two "sing and harmonize", and finally realize charging. Of course, for safety reasons, the wireless charging system should also have functions such as foreign object detection and guided alignment.

Principles of wireless charging technology

In fact, the last time wireless charging received high attention was back at the end of last year. Electric vehicle giant Tesla announced that it is developing a wireless inductive charger for home use, and the car will start charging automatically after parking in the garage, which directly detonated the capital market, and the stock prices of related players began to rise.

You must know that in July last year, Tesla also acquired a German wireless charging company to quickly supplement its shortcomings in the field of wireless charging. And recently, according to public information, Tesla's electric pickup truck may soon become Tesla's first model for wireless charging. Because the service manual of the pickup truck already has the relevant clause of "inductive charging".

Not so long ago, there was a major technological breakthrough in this area. According to the R&D team, the wireless charging pad can transmit power to the car with an output power of 100kW (50% charging in 20 minutes). This is also expected to solve the key problem of low charging power (mostly 3, 7, 11kW power levels) before wireless charging.

Second, the "stuck neck" is still upstream

If we disassemble the industrial chain of wireless charging, you will find that overseas companies in the upstream chip and component links have an unshakable position in a short period of time. Of course, domestic players are also frantically catching up, such as Maxic (688458) in the field of chips.

According to Maxic's own disclosure, it is currently actively deploying in the field of on-board wireless charging, and some products have passed AEC-Q100 vehicle specification certification and have been tested and verified by a number of automotive suppliers, which can be said to be at the forefront of relevant domestic players.

Wireless charging industry chain

Domestic players are more gathered in the wireless charging module integration link, this link is relatively low, the market has not yet formed a relatively fixed competition pattern, players are trying to achieve deep binding with the downstream. For example, Huayang Group (002906) has already provided on-board wireless charging and other products for OEMs (such as Changan).

For downstream OEMs, the author has carefully sorted out that since 2017, many OEMs have been actively launching concept models that support wireless charging of power batteries. However, the ideal plump, realistic skinny, in the end, most of them did not achieve mass production and sales. Therefore, when JiHu recently announced that it was preparing to mass-produce a stop-and-charge model, it directly filled the industry's expectations.

Third, we should be problem-oriented

Although wireless charging has received high attention in the capital market recently, if you look at it calmly, it is undeniable that automotive wireless charging technology is still in its early stages.

First of all, charging power is still a hurdle that is difficult to bypass. For example, the wireless charging technology equipped with Hongqi has a maximum output power of 10kW, which is only a little higher than the 7kW power of the slow charging pile, not to mention the comparison with battery swapping and supercharging. There is still a lot of room for improvement in this area.

In addition, because the ground end equipment and vehicle end equipment may be produced by different equipment manufacturers, the inconsistent standards are also a key factor restricting the development of the industry, and further standardization at the top level is needed. Because of the energy loss in the wireless transmission process, the low charging efficiency is also criticized by industry experts.

The most important thing is the cost, wireless charging has high requirements for infrastructure, charging components are usually laid on the ground, and ground transformation has become an important problem, so its cost cannot be reduced at present.

Therefore, whether wireless charging is a false proposition still needs to be further observed.
