Embark on a journey of exploration in the Groundwater Science Laboratory – "Groundwater Science Laboratory Open Day" of the 2024 Earth Day series of activities

author:Beijing plans natural resources

Rivers, lakes, seas, ponds, abysses and streams, nature is full of many landscapes with water as the main body. Compared with the beautiful scenery of the ground, the important groundwater is often "hidden". As an important source of water for drinking, agricultural production, and industrial processing, groundwater is also essential for the functional health of ecosystems such as wetlands and rivers. In order to enhance young people's understanding of the importance of groundwater, understand the history and detection process of groundwater monitoring, stimulate their interest in scientific exploration, establish the concept of green development, and promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, on March 31, more than 10 groups of parent-child families were organized to enter the groundwater science education hall of the Beijing Institute of Geological and Environmental Monitoring, and jointly start a wonderful journey of groundwater exploration.

The event was hosted by the Beijing Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Commission, undertaken by the Science and Technology and Information Technology Department of the Beijing Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Commission, the Beijing Institute of Geological Environment Monitoring, the Beijing Institute of Geological Disaster Prevention and Control, and the Beijing Geological Society, and supported by the Beijing Science Popularization Volunteer Service Corps.

When she first entered the groundwater science laboratory, Li Li, deputy director of the laboratory, led everyone into the science exhibition area as the main teacher, telling the magical process of turning groundwater into tap water, allowing the children to participate in filtration experiments and deepen their understanding of the groundwater filtration process.

In order to further enhance the children's interest in water, the laboratory has specially prepared original science puzzles with the themes of "Where does tap water come from?" and "Where does sewage go?", so that they can further understand the purification of tap water and the treatment process of sewage in the process of jigsaw puzzles, and have a new understanding of where tap water comes from and where it goes at home. This "play-and-learn" approach stimulates the interest of young people, allowing them to gain valuable scientific knowledge and a deeper understanding of groundwater resource protection while experiencing fun puzzle games.

In the inorganic salt treatment room, the children experienced the experiment of judging the acidity and alkalinity of liquids, put the pH test paper into a beaker containing different liquids, and then observed it against the pH value color card to estimate the pH value of mineral water, cola and soda.

However, it is difficult to get accurate values based on visual observation alone, and some children even come up with different results. Therefore, in scientific research, it is often necessary to use pH testers for more accurate detection. In order to obtain more accurate results, under the guidance of laboratory technicians, three children used instruments to determine the pH values of three liquids that are more accurate than the dipstick test method. During the experiment, many children stretched their necks and waited intently for the numbers on the display of the instrument to stabilize, hoping to prove the accuracy of their observations.

Subsequently, the lecturer and the technicians of each laboratory led everyone to visit the microbiology laboratory, organic pretreatment room and instrument room in turn, showing small microbial samples and huge testing equipment, and exploring the mystery of groundwater from different angles. During the visit, many diligent and inquisitive children raised various questions, and the teachers patiently answered them.

After the lab trip, the children and adults ushered in the "double challenge" of creative design and hands-on ability - the Earth Day theme painting session. Before the drawing, everyone was divided into two groups as a family unit, and the group needed to design and draw together, and finally each formed a complete work.

From focused discussions to finalizing design ideas, from patiently creating manuscripts to adding color...... Each and every one of the participants contributed to the work. They poured their love for the earth into their pens and painted a colorful and beautiful picture, and at the same time, the concept of cherishing the earth and jointly building a community of life between man and nature took root in their hearts.
