Lai Qingde said in a big tone that if he was elected, he would give the mainland a chance to review its policy toward Taiwan

author:Professor Liu Yong

Unexpectedly, but within reason, Lai Qingde, as the Democratic Progressive Party candidate for the current election of the leader of the Taiwan region, really began to make strange moves at the last moment, and this time he was no longer satisfied with pointing the finger at other candidates, but even more directly at the mainland.

According to media reports on the island, at an international press conference, Lai Qingde openly said that if he can be elected as the leader of the Taiwan region, it will "help the 'Indo-Pacific region' create a new situation" and, more importantly, give the mainland the opportunity to review its policy toward Taiwan.

The report pointed out that the press conference was held by Lai Qingde and his deputy Xiao Meiqin, and they also took great pains to invite 128 media from 28 countries and regions to attend, and clearly pointed out that this election is very important.

Lai Qingde and Xiao Meiqin held a press conference

At this press conference, Lai Qingde first emphasized his own attitude, proposing the so-called "four pillars of peace", that is, to establish the so-called "defense and deterrence," strengthen economic security, and cooperate with other partners, and the fourth point is to serve as a "leader" in cross-strait relations.

He also stressed that if elected, he will continue to continue Tsai Ing-wen's practice over the past eight years and devote himself to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. In addition, Lai Qingde made special mention of the mainland and cross-strait relations.

He said that on the basis of "reciprocity and dignity," he would open the door to exchanges with the mainland and increase the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait. I believe that anyone with a discerning eye can see the absurdity of this statement, but Lai Qingde's shamelessness is far more than that.

In the face of these hundreds of reporters, Lai Qingde even openly said that the leaders of some European countries may think that the future of the Taiwan region has nothing to do with them, but he believes that although they are far apart, the potential for cooperation is very great, and he looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Europe.

Of course, in addition to expressing his willingness to give the mainland a chance to review its Taiwan policy and to show that he hopes to develop more cooperation with Europe, Lai Qingde naturally did not forget to criticize his rival Kuomintang.

He is opposed to the attitude of former Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou in upholding the "consensus of '92," holding that we cannot have illusions about peace and that peace without "sovereignty" is a fake peace. The Taiwan region needs to pursue so-called "peace" by strength.

On the whole, Lai Qingde's speech this time not only criticized the Kuomintang, but also wanted to win the support of other international forces, and even showed his attitude toward the mainland. However, Lai Qingde's remarks will only expose his sinister intentions in vain to further harm the interests of the Taiwan region.

First of all, as Lai Qingde said, it is necessary to give the mainland an opportunity to review its policy toward Taiwan. To be honest, it is still a matter of whether Lai Qingde can be elected now, and in the end, it is uncertain whether the DPP will be successfully removed from the shelves by Kuomintang candidate Hou Youyi.

In addition, even if Lai Qingde can win the election by chance, he is not qualified to start a dialogue with the mainland on the basis of the so-called "respect for equality." There is no position for the mainland to conduct a so-called review.

Speaking of review, Lai Qingde and the DPP should review themselves even more. In the past eight years, Tsai Ing-wen's various acts of "seeking independence" have led to the obstruction of cross-strait exchanges and cooperation. Now, Lai Qingde is also preparing to continue Tsai Ing-wen's approach, which is simply a continuous poison against the Taiwan region.

Second, Lai Qingde believes that it is necessary to strengthen the "defense capability" of the Taiwan region in order to "guarantee peace." In reality, however, this is nothing more than an excuse for the DPP to "resist reunification by force." If the Taiwan region wants to achieve real peace, there is only one choice, that is, the complete reunification of the country.

Relying on the United States to seek independence and resisting reunification by force is a dead end

Lai Ching-te's constant emphasis on strengthening Taiwan's so-called "defense capability" in order to safeguard the "peace" in his perception has once again exposed the fact that if he is elected, it will be difficult for the situation in the Taiwan Strait to be truly eased.

All in all, Lai Qingde's series of statements this time actually show his frontline understanding of cross-strait relations and the DPP's obsessiveness in clinging to the delusion of "Taiwan independence."

And this press conference is most likely also a political show specially made by the DPP in order to build momentum for itself. The press conference was held on Jan. 9, and the vote for Taiwan's leaders was on Jan. 13.

Even from the time of view, it is not difficult to see that Lai Qingde's purpose is to get a big vote before the official start of voting. As for whether this move will be useful or not, it is unknown.

The reunification of the motherland, the trend of history

However, judging from Lai Qingde's remarks, if anyone who has a little rational understanding of cross-strait relations and the future development of the Taiwan region will not be able to listen to Lai Qingde's nonsense.

It can only be said that political showmanship for the purpose of coaxing votes can be regarded as a handy means for the DPP. Against the backdrop of the rising support of Kuomintang candidate Hou Youyi, it is not surprising that Lai Qingde can make such absurd remarks.

However, the DPP must be clear about the implementation of the principle, regardless of whether Lai Qingde can be elected or not, or whether it continues Tsai Ing-wen's practice, the ultimate destination of the Taiwan region has always been the complete reunification of the country.
