It is rumored that Samsung will upgrade its NAND chip factories in China after obtaining a US exemption

A few days ago, the South Korean president's office informed that the United States agreed to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to provide equipment to its factories in China without additional licenses. On October 16, Mobile China learned that it was reported that after obtaining a US exemption, Samsung will upgrade its NAND chip factory in China.

According to Yonhap News Agency a few days ago, the US government recently informed the South Korean side through the economic security dialogue channel of the export control department and the National Security Council that it decided to designate Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix semiconductor factories in China as "verified end users". Inclusion on the list would not require additional licensing, amounting to an indefinite suspension of U.S. export controls.

In October last year, the United States issued regulations prohibiting US companies from exporting some cutting-edge semiconductor production equipment to Chinese semiconductor manufacturers, which brought uncertainty to foreign manufacturers in China. Since then, against the objections of the two South Korean companies, the U.S. government has granted a one-year exemption from the import of equipment related to its factories in China, which is valid until October 11, 2023.

With two days to go before the exemption period, this latest notice means that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will be exempted for the supply of equipment to their Chinese factories indefinitely. In this regard, Samsung Electronics issued a statement saying that "through close coordination with relevant governments, the uncertainty related to its semiconductor production and operation in China has been greatly eliminated"; Regarding the US government's decision to exempt export control regulations, SK Hynix also said that "this decision will contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain."
