A month later, the first modern rehabilitation research center in China's history was completed. At the inauguration ceremony, Sha Rif, Deputy Director of the United Nations Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs, was entrusted by UN Secretary-General De Cuéliar to solemnly award Deng Pufang, who is the president of the China Disabled Persons' Federation, with a special award for his outstanding contributions to the "Decade of Disabled Persons (1983-1992)" and the cause of disabled people in China.

Deng Pufang was born on April 16, 1944.
In the autumn of 1962, Deng Pufang was admitted to the Department of Technical Physics of Peking University with an average score of 90 points per subject.
Deng Pufang, who has just entered the university era, dreams of becoming a great scientist. Since then, he has studied diligently and studied seriously, and his grades have always remained excellent.
Deng Pufang's interests are extremely wide, and he often talks about the world with his classmates. He is also very willing to help others, often for some students with difficult families to solve the difficulties, so he has a lot of prestige among his classmates.
In addition, Deng Pufang also likes physical exercise very much and is very strong.
In September 1965, Deng Pufang successfully joined the Communist Party of China.
With the growth of knowledge and the gradual maturity of his thinking, Deng Pufang's childish dream of becoming a great scientist when he was a child has gradually become the ideal of dedicating himself to the atomic energy cause of the motherland after graduation.
Deng Pufang looked forward to it and worked hard. However, an unprecedented national catastrophe broke out on the land of China, and Deng Pufang was also disabled - the first lumbar vertebrae, the twelfth thoracic vertebrae were fractured, and both lower limbs were paraplegic.
After the Lin Biao incident, Deng Xiaoping and Zhuo Lin returned to Beijing and immediately requested the central authorities to treat Deng Pufang's illness.
In April 1972, Premier Zhou Enlai, on behalf of the Central Committee, instructed:
"Deng Pufang's illness, or ask the 301 Hospital to treat it."
By the summer of 1974, some experts and scholars in the medical field had been "liberated" and returned to their original jobs.

Under the presidency of Qian Xinzhong, Shanghai orthopedic experts and orthopedic experts from 301 Hospital jointly diagnosed and decided to conduct an operation on Deng Pufang. This was Deng Pufang's first surgery since he was paralyzed for six years in 1968. The doctors on the operating table found that Deng Pufang had serious injuries from external chest and lumbar spine fractures, as well as a section of spinal fibrosis necrosis in the chest from 12th to 6th, causing Deng Pufang's paraplegia to rise from his legs to the position of his chest.

The doctors had to stitch up the open knife and suture it, declaring the operation a failure.
Deng Pufang endured for 6 years, more than 2,000 days and nights, but what he was looking forward to was a cold reality: he would never be able to stand up. This reality is acceptable only to those who can overcome death.

Since then, Deng Pufang has often lay in a hospital bed to repair cameras, radios, televisions, watches and some medical instruments for doctors, nurses and patients. Whoever brought what and asked him to fix it, he dared to take over. But beforehand, he always had to ask two questions:
"Are you afraid that it will be broken?" Give it to me without fear. ”
Then fiddle around until things are fixed.
It is worth mentioning that Deng Pufang also assembled a black-and-white TV set on the sickbed. Whenever he labored with diligent and dexterous hands, his mind and brain power naturally flowed, sublimated to the realm of self-forgetfulness, and threw his body and inner pain out of the clouds.
Later, Deng Pufang handed over several "poor brothers" in the ward of the 301 Hospital, chatting and playing bridge together, and sometimes when the interest came, he would also pool his money to buy some liquor to drink.

In 1974, Deng Pufang ushered in a turning point in his life.
On January 7, General Wang Shusheng, the father of a patient named Wang Luguang, died of esophageal cancer. Deng Pufang once accompanied Wang Luguang to visit this veteran general who had been in the battlefield for a long time. When the general was dying, he insisted on sitting up from his bed and said to these two disabled young men:
"You're still young, you should do something."
That night, Deng Pufang couldn't sleep all night. In such a harsh political situation, in the case of a nearly fragmented body, can the boy's desire to serve the motherland still be realized? What else can I do?
The old general's dying instructions once again ignited the flame of Deng Pufang's ideals buried deep in his heart, and he could no longer walk, so could he not make a difference? Are you going to spend your whole life in the ward?
So Deng Pufang perked up and began to think about the future with other patients, as if they were going to a university again, and they were thinking bitterly about life, history, the country and the nation.

After leaving the Qinghe Welfare Home, Deng Linfang finally returned to his parents, and his family, who had been separated for 10 years, was finally reunited.
During this time, Deng Pufang helped his brothers and sisters to take their children at home, tutored his brother to apply for graduate school courses, insisted on going to Beijing Radio No. 3 Factory every afternoon to participate in half-day volunteer labor, and sat in a wheelchair in the evening to play ball and throw frisbee. Later you can even jump from one couch to another chair to pick up and put things away.
In this way, Deng Pufang secretly increased the amount of activity of his body, and he was ready to challenge fate again, but fate once again cruelly and mercilessly threw him out.

At that time, the Chinese orthopedic community could do nothing about it, and patients had to stay in bed and wait for death.

A year later, a rehabilitation procedure called "ingestion and fixation of the spine" was introduced to China by a delegation of senior American orthopedic specialists. This kind of surgery, which originated in World War II and rehabilitated traumatized people, has long been developed in Western countries.
Macus and Dr. Bao De, president of the American 1980 Orthopaedic Society, who conducted an academic exchange at 301 Hospital, saw Deng Pufang's case. The two American doctors sincerely suggested that if Deng Pufang could go to the United States, they would be willing to operate on him.
On the road to death, another glimmer of life emerged. This vitality not only appeared in front of Deng Pufang, but also opened up a new world for the Chinese orthopedic community.
Later, Dr. Marx introduced Deng Pufang's condition to Professor Armstrong of Canada, a well-known spine expert in the world orthopedic community.
Armstrong immediately said he was willing to operate on the dying Chinese patient in a hospital in Ottawa.
A few days later, Wu Zhicheng, a Chinese orthopedic expert studying in the United States, returned to Beijing to convey Professor Armstrong's advice to Zhuo Lin. The matter of sending Deng Pufang to Canada for surgery was thus decided.
To this end, Zhuo Lin held a family meeting and mobilized the whole family to pool money for Deng Pufang to go to Canada for treatment. The whole family understood that Deng Pufang would accept the test of life and death when he went.
At the end of September, the family used the money they had put together to buy plane tickets to Ottawa for Deng Pufang and nurse Li Dajie. Dr. Wu Zhikang, who went to study "chiropractic fixation" surgery, and his fellow translators. Deng Pufang lay on a stretcher and was carried onto the plane by someone, saying goodbye to his relatives and the motherland.
At this time, Deng Pufang embarked on the voyage with a calm heart. He knew that in case this operation failed, Dr. Wu would be able to bring the advanced technology of this surgical treatment back to the motherland.
After arriving in Ottawa, Deng Pufang was immediately admitted to the hospital, and two days later he went to the operating table, and the operation was performed by Professor Armstrong and Professor Wu Zhikang of China as an assistant.
When the sharp scalpel cut a 40-centimeter-long incision along Dunpark's back, the experienced Professor Armstrong was taken aback. Deng Pufang's spinal trauma overlapped and overlapped, the operation was extremely complicated, and several critical situations occurred.
During the operation, there was a sudden hemorrhage, and Professor Armstrong's brain was occasionally soaked in cold sweat.

In the end, Professor Armstrong finally successfully fixed two Hastelloy rods and eight steel claws with a length of 30 centimeters and a diameter of 4 millimeters in place in Deng Pufang's body.
When Deng Pufang came down from the operating table, the person was completely out of shape.
His face was puffy, his head was many times larger than normal, and his eyes were bulging widely. Doctors were concerned about whether Deng Pufang would be able to withstand the trauma of the operation.
After getting off the operating table, Deng Pufang was placed in the intensive care unit. A week later, Professor Marx arrived from the United States and went to the operating table with Armstrong, Wu Zhikang, and another young Canadian doctor to perform a second major operation on Deng Pufang.
After the operation, Deng Pufang's condition was very unstable, and the knife wound did not heal, so another knife wound healing was performed.
Soon, Deng Pufang was complicated by pulmonary thrombosis, and repeated for more than a month before he began to get out of danger. He then left the hospital and stayed at the Chinese Embassy in Canada to recuperate.
In order to recover quickly, Professor Armstrong put a hard plastic bracket on Deng Pufang's body, which made him lie motionless on his back on the bed and look at the ceiling above his head.

Professor Ames waited for Lang to arrange for him to go to a rehabilitation center for half a year's rehabilitation training in the hope of getting Deng Pufang to get rid of the stent and sit up again.
Surprisingly, Deng Pufang actually refused, and he asked to return to China immediately.
Didn't Deng Pufang want to sit up? Didn't Deng Pufang know that there are no rehabilitation centers in China at all?
In fact, Deng Pufang's idea is to establish a rehabilitation center for the disabled in China.
In the early 1980s, the concept of modern rehabilitation was still unfamiliar in China, and Deng Pufang, who had been looking at the ceiling for several months in Canada, first recognized the meaning and significance of rehabilitation.
When a disabled person puts all the disabled people in the world in his heart, he has a desire. Deng Pufang could no longer live in Canada, and he was impatient to return to China, introduce the modern rehabilitation concept and modern rehabilitation system to China, and call on the society to establish a rehabilitation research center for the disabled in China, so that the physiological functions of the vast number of disabled people can be improved and compensated, and they can be reintegrated into society.

In February 1981, Deng Pufang, wearing that armor-like shell, left Canada on a stretcher and returned to his homeland. It had been two years since Professor Armstrong had re-sat up with the steel plate and iron bone implanted for him.
It was March 15, 1983, a good spring day. Deng Pufang, who was in a wheelchair, found Wang Ruiguang and the first batch of volunteer disabled volunteer workers and set up the "Preparatory Working Group for the China Rehabilitation Center".
A year later, on March 15, the China Welfare Foundation for the Disabled was officially established.
After that, they called their cause "the cause of spring."
In July 1986, Deng Pufang walked to the front line of Laoshan in a wheelchair, and on the way he met a young soldier who had lost a leg in the shelling.
Deng Pufang touched the warrior with his hands, and the little warrior's tears fell down and said:
"I'm only 18 years old, I don't have legs, what else can I do in the future?"
Deng Pufang raised his hand on his chest and said:
"You're better than me, and I don't have anything down here." It is not easy for people to live, let us understand each other! ”

In fact, the situation in Deng Pufang's body was even worse, his blood circulation was poor, his kidney function was extremely poor, one side of the kidney had shrunk, his lungs were weak, and his liver was hardened.
Deng Pufang can't sweat because 80% of the skin that belongs to his body does not sweat. Every summer, or work activities, and even when the pain should be sweating, Deng Pufang is particularly difficult to endure, the sweat of the whole body can only penetrate from a small piece of skin above the chest and back, and the pain of high paraplegic patients who cannot sweat is unimaginable to normal people.
Deng Pufang could hardly sleep. More than 20 years of new wounds and old wounds have left several permanent pain points on his body. It can't be touched at all, and every night late at night, people will have a dark attack. Deng Pufang had to grit his teeth and stay up until dawn.

In order to solve the problem of urinating, the doctors had to make a leak in his belly and lead the urine into a plastic pocket outside his body. To prevent the infection from causing a high fever that persisted at 40 degrees, he had to drink plenty of cold boiled water every day to flush his kidneys, bladder and plastic catheters.
But even so, Deng Pufang also has to carry a plastic "bladder" like this and run around for the cause of China's disabled people.
Where there's a will there's a way.
Five years later, the China Rehabilitation Center was built, and the cause of spring was recognized by autumn. Deng Pufang led his partners to raise the banner of nationalism and humanitarianism and pioneer the journey with the green of life.
