According to data from the China Fishery Statistics Yearbook, China's marine catch of herring in 2019 was 11 374 tons, up 10.4% year-on-year.

In 2019, the highest marine catch of herring across China was in Fujian Province, with 3908 tonnes of herring catch, followed by Guangdong Province, with 3566 tonnes of herring, and third, Zhejiang Province, with 1552 tonnes of herring.
Second, the import and export volume of frozen herring
According to data from China Customs, China's herring exports have gradually declined since 2018, with frozen herring exports of 82,993 tons in 2018, China's frozen herring exports falling to 50,657 tons by 2020, and China's frozen herring exports from January to February 2021 at 3,140 tons.

China's frozen herring imports from January to February 2021 were 166 tonnes.

Third, the import and export volume of frozen herring fillets
Since 2015, China's imports of frozen herring fillets have been rising, and by 2019, China's imports of frozen herring fillets rose to 238579 kilograms, an increase of 52.9% compared with 2018. In 2020, due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, China's frozen herring fillet imports fell to 133394 tons, down 44.1% compared to 2019.
According to Chinese customs data, China's frozen herring fillet exports in 2019 were 584542 kilograms, down 11.9% year-on-year; in 2020, China's frozen herring fillet exports fell to 574474 kilograms, down 1.7% year-on-year.
Fourth, the import volume of fresh or cold herring
According to Chinese customs data, China's fresh or cold herring imports have increased year by year since 2015, reaching a maximum in 2019, with fresh or cold herring imports of 305243 kilograms. In 2020, due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, China's fresh or cold herring imports fell to 75,824 kg, a decrease of 75.2% compared to 2019. From January to February 2021, China's fresh or cold herring imports were 24,040 kg.
Fifth, the characteristics of herring
Herring is a cold-water pelagic migratory fish, suitable for distribution of 0-17 degrees Celsius water temperature, mostly in 6 degrees Celsius water foraging, swimming offshore to spawn in 16 degrees Celsius water when breeding, cold-water pelagic migratory fish. Herring has a streamlined body, flattened laterally, silvery-white, and a bluish metallic back. The body is rounded and scaled, easily shedding, and has no lateral lines. The eyes have lipid eyelids, the mouth is small and oblique, and the anterior upper position. The upper jaws and palate bones are toothless, and the lower jaws, plough bones and tongue have fine teeth with gill rakers filtering water. It feeds mainly on copepods, pterodactyls and other plankton. It is also a food for natural predators such as seals, whales and other large carnivorous fish, and Atlantic herring plays a vital role in regulating the ecology of the marine food chain. Atlantic herring is mainly distributed along the east-west coast of the Atlantic. Atlantic herring often inhabits sea areas of about 80 m above the surface to a depth of 200 m, sometimes entering brackish water areas or brackish lakes in the inner bay.
