Europe is suffering from extreme drought this summer as climate change dries up rivers and causes millions of people to swelter in triple-figure heat, with farmers across the continent issuing warnings about crop loss.

In Saint-Emilion in southwestern France, the harvest will fall by 30% this year due to a lack of rain, dried clay-rich soils in organic vineyards that are "almost as hard as cement".

In Spain, which provides nearly half of the world's olive oil, olive harvests are likely to be significantly lower than in previous years, with olive production forecast to fall by a third and cereal production by 25 percent.

This summer, Europe is breaking all kinds of records, from high temperatures to low precipitation. Nearly two-thirds of the EU's 27 countries are either coping with drought or are about to enter it. The European Drought Observatory said this week that 47 percent of the EU territory was on alert, while 17 percent was on "alert."
