teamLab 'Phenomenon Abu Dhabi' will be an immersive, inspiring space where the intersection of art and technology will ignite the curiosity, imagination and creativity of all visitors. Scheduled for completion in 2024, it is the latest addition to the Saadiyat Cultural District. The 17,000 m2 (total floor area) teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi" building was conceived to create an unparalleled unique installation through an extensive experimental process that would be unique to Abu Dhabi.

The Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has partnered with Miral, the creator of Abu Dhabi's leading destinations and experiences, to develop concepts, buildings and facilities with TeamLab, an interdisciplinary art group in Tokyo known for its unique artistic vision.

To strengthen Abu Dhabi's position as a leading cultural hub, TeamLab 'Phenomenon Abu Dhabi' will be juxtaposed with the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and other major landmarks in Saadiyat's cultural district, adding to the region's creative offerings by building a bridge between history, culture and creativity that immerses visitors in innovative art experiences.

Visitors will be invited to open their minds and embark on a journey through the new concept of teamLab's environmental phenomena, which provides a new perspective on the world around us. Featured works of art are created and shaped by environments that produce various "phenomena". The project was conceived by teamLab and realized by Abu Dhabi-based MZ Architects. It plays an important role in providing an environment for the free and organic development of works of art, as if they were life forms in themselves. This experience is unique to every visitor and changes with each visit as they discover a place where they can endlessly explore and push beyond the limits of their imagination.

TeamLab's artworks are part of global institutional collections, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, and along with many others, teamLab's artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects are creating an original experience in Abu Dhabi that will make teamlab 'Phenomenon Abu Dhabi' a unique experience in the UAE capital.

Mr. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of dct Abu Dhabi, said. "Curiosity and imagination are at the heart of us as human beings, inspiring all of our discoveries, inventions and innovations over thousands of years. Nestled at the crossroads of art, technology, nature and high-tech fantasies, Abu Dhabi's TeamLab "Phenomenon" will provide all visitors with a world of boundless wonder and creativity, encouraging new perspectives that are essential for a prosperous future. The TeamLab "phenomenon" adds another outstanding experience to our world-leading cultural destination, which will be unique to Abu Dhabi and cement Abu Dhabi's position as a destination of excellence. The journey offered by teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi" will trigger the senses, cultivate curiosity, spark the imagination and awaken a thirst for knowledge, fully supporting our commitment to inspire a new generation of innovators and creators in the Emirate and beyond. "

Toshiyuki Inoko, founder of teamLab, said. "We are extremely honoured to open teamLab 'Phenomenon Abu Dhabi' in Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Cultural District, a world-leading future-focused city. At teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi", visitors will be immersed in a world that is organically transformed and developed through people's participation and action, and it is this practical experience that expands our sense of worth. The future is built on the sum of the grandeur of people's creations. Curiosity prompts people to have a deeper understanding of the world and leads to creativity. We believe that imagination determines the direction of this creativity. We hope that teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi" will create opportunities for curiosity and imagination to be born.

Speaking about the idea behind the project, Inoko continued. teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi" is based on the new concept of teamLab, in which the existence of a work of art is created by phenomena produced by its environment. The artworks of the teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi" pavilion do not exist independently, but are created by the environment in which various phenomena are produced, stabilizing their structure. Objects such as stones and man-made works can maintain a stable structure on their own. Unlike these, the existence of teamLab 'Phenomena Abu Dhabi' artworks is dependent on their environment. The environment produces phenomena and stabilizes its structure – these stable phenomena are the reasons for the existence of the creation of works of art.

"Environmental phenomena are released by substances that have always been responsible for maintaining the existing structure. Elements like air, water and light that permeate our daily lives are transformed into unique phenomena by their environments and become works of art. The boundaries of their existence are vague and continuous. Even if people destroy the work, the work will continue to exist as long as its environment is maintained. Conversely, if the environment is not maintained, the work disappears. Over time, people's consciousness will expand from existence itself to the environment. A stone can continue to exist in a closed box, isolated from the outside world, but life cannot sustain its existence in such a box because it is created by the environment. Life is a miraculous phenomenon that arises from flow in a continuous world".

To celebrate the official launch of the project, DCT Abu Dhabi also announced a preview event that allows visitors to experience immersive artworks embodying the concept of "Infinite Curiosity" before opening, taking them on a journey of wonder and sensory exploration. The event will take place in Mamsha Al Saadiyat from 24 June to 17 July.

The launch of teamLab "Phenomenon Abu Dhabi" reaffirms Abu Dhabi's vision of enriching the emirate's cultural landscape and promoting its Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI), positioning the UAE capital as a hub for creativity and innovation. As culture becomes a major driver of social and economic development, the emirate is fast becoming a globally renowned talent hub and a major producer of creative content. Abu Dhabi seeks to expand artistic and cultural expression, offering diverse cultural programmes to its communities and visitors to inspire creativity and knowledge development, create a culturally vibrant and artistically conscious city, and maintain strong ties with the wider region and the world.

The UAE continues to support and develop cultural institutions, including the upcoming Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum and the Abu Dhabi Museum of Natural History. The UAE's performing arts, media and gaming sector will also see further investment in its diverse programs and initiatives.

The Saadiyat Cultural District is an ambitious undertaking that will become one of the most outstanding cultural destinations in the world. Through its museums, cultural centers and educational institutions, the district will have one of the most concentrated cultural experiences in the world. The region already has the world-renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi museum, as well as the Manarat Al Saadiyat Cultural Centre, which contributes to the region's vibrant arts scene through internationally relevant exhibitions and events, seminars and creative programmes.

The Saadiyat Cultural District will soon also include the Zayed National Museum, the National Museum of the UAE; Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, with a focus on global modern and contemporary art; And the Abraham Family House, which will include three religious spaces in one complex — mosque, synagogue and chapel — to inspire and nurture acceptance and peaceful coexistence among people of all faiths.
