78.7 million units! Global PC shipments slipped 4.3 percent: Apple's Mac bucked the trend

On April 29, market research agency Counterpoint Research released data showing that global PC shipments reached 78.7 million units in the first quarter of 2022, down 4.3% year-on-year. Among them, Lenovo ranked first with a share of 23.1%, maintaining its dominant position in the industry.

Detailed data, Lenovo PC shipments in the first quarter of 2022 were 18.2 million units, down 10% year-on-year. HP shipped 15.9 million units, down 16% year-over-year and second with a market share of 20.2%. It was followed by Dell and Apple, with shipments of 13.8 million units and 7.1 million units, respectively, up 1% and 8% year-on-year. In addition, Asus's shipments increased by 4%, and Acer shipments fell by 1%, both maintaining a 7% market share.

Counterpoint Research said that the overall decline in PC shipments in the quarter may be affected by the following four factors: global inflation reduces the spending power of consumers and enterprises; changes in the situation in Russia and Ukraine have brought great uncertainty and concern to future economic development; persistent parts shortages and logistics challenges; and the epidemic lockdown in many parts of the country has reduced production capacity and supply.

The outbreak of the global epidemic has promoted the development of remote office and online course scenarios, driving the growth of PC sales. However, the global economic situation this year is indeed not very optimistic, coupled with the long-term chip shortage problem, resulting in a decline in PC shipments. In this unstable background, Lenovo has retained the first position with its own advantages, but it has also been further shortened by HP, and the challenges facing Lenovo are getting bigger and bigger.

Apple's performance this quarter should be the most eye-catching, still maintaining 8% growth in the countertrend, which is mainly due to the strength of Apple's M1 series chips. In November 2020, Apple equipped the MacBook product with a self-developed M1 chip for the first time, allowing Mac products to obtain stronger performance. Last year, Apple launched the M1 Pro/M1 Max/M1 Ultra, pushing the performance of Mac products to new heights, hanging the Intel and AMD products of the same period.

Many productivity-conscious consumers will prioritize Apple's MacBook, because the experience improvement brought by the M1 chip is really too obvious. There is news that Apple may launch a lower-positioned, cheaper MacBook product, and the M2 chip will also be unveiled soon, which will have a greater impact on other PC manufacturers.
