The Call of Duty series has seen a sharp drop in player numbers in the last two years

According to Activision Blizzard's first quarter 2022 financial report, the number of players in the Call of Duty series of games fell sharply in 2021 and 2022, with 150 million monthly active users in 2021, and by March 31, 2022, the number of monthly active users of the series dropped to 100 million, losing 50 million players.

While 100 million monthly active users is still a huge number, it's also the biggest drop in player numbers since call of Duty: Warzone released in 2020. Activision blamed it on the poor quality of Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone.

Activision now seems to have pinned its hopes on Call of Duty 19: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2, the latter of which will be built from scratch to bring breakthrough innovation.
