BMW has set clear carbon emission reduction targets and is committed to sustainable development

"Carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality" have become the keywords of social development in recent years, and the mainland has issued a series of relevant policies, planning and management documents at the national and local levels to strive to achieve carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. For the energy-intensive automotive industry, "double carbon" has also become a high-frequency word that cannot be avoided. As a responsible and responsible multinational enterprise, BMW actively responds to the call of the Chinese government, practices corporate social responsibility, and contributes to the sustainable development of the entire automotive industry and even Chinese society.

BMW is leading stakeholders to take tangible and sustainable development actions. In fact, BMW has taken sustainable development as an important direction for coordinated development with China's environment and set clear carbon emission reduction targets. Speaking at the BMW Group's annual financial report last month, Mr. Chiptzer, Chairman of the BMW Group, said: "The BMW Group regards the environment as an important stakeholder. The BMW Group is the first German car company to join the '1.5°C Temperature Target Action' launched by the Science Carbon Target Initiative. Therefore, our commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 is scientifically validated, transparent and crosses the entire value chain, which is my comprehensive understanding of responsibility. ”

No perpetuality, no luxury

Accelerate electrification and digital transformation

There is no doubt that sustainability is at the heart of the BMW Group's corporate strategy. Mr. Gao Le, President and CEO of BMW Group Greater China, said at the 8th China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum that bmw group with China as its home regards sustainable development as an important direction for coordinated development with China's environment, and fully supports China to achieve the "double carbon" goal.

"Electrification and digitalization are driving further convergence between the automotive and energy industries. Strengthening cross-industry collaboration is key to achieving the 'double carbon' goal." Only through the joint efforts of the industry, the government and the whole society to create good conditions to achieve this goal can the transformation of the automotive industry be truly realized. Gao Le said.

Electrification is one of the important ways to achieve carbon neutrality. At the product level, BMW continues to accelerate the pace of electrification. According to the news released by the BMW Group's annual financial report, the BMW Group announced that the electrification process will be accelerated again: in 2022, the mass production and trial production of pure electric vehicle models will reach 15 models; in 2022, 5 pure electric products will be presented in the Chinese market: including innovative BMW iX, innovative BMW i4, BMW iX3, new BMW i3 and innovative BMW i7. By the end of 2025, the BMW Group plans to deliver 2 million pure electric vehicles worldwide.

The BMW Group is not only focused on reducing carbon emissions from the driving process of vehicles by promoting electrification, but also has set carbon reduction targets that cover the entire life cycle of the vehicle. According to this goal, by 2030, the BMW Group plans to reduce the average life cycle carbon emissions of bicycles by 40% compared with 2019, reducing emissions by at least 200 million tons. Among them, the supply chain side is reduced by 20%, the production level is reduced by 80%, and the use stage is reduced by 50%.

On the production side, in the recently released list of "Best Practices for Enterprises to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in 2021" of the United Nations Global Compact China Network, BMW Brilliance Automobile Co., Ltd. has been rated as a best practice enterprise for the third consecutive year for its exploration practice and outstanding performance in the field of sustainable development, and has become the only automobile manufacturing enterprise among the selected companies in 2021.

Accumulate steps, to a thousand miles

Take the lead in layout and innovate the after-sales business

In the face of the general trend of "circular economy", each step of the priority layout is prescient and an opportunity. At the heart of the BMW Group's strategy is the continuous reduction of CO2 emissions and the continuous improvement of resource efficiency. Under the wave of the Group's sustainability, BMW's customer service and support department also gradually realizes the sustainable strategy and continuously improves the customer experience from the after-sales level and with the accumulation of every small step.

Reducing resource consumption and optimizing logistics management are also important aspects of green and sustainable development solutions. The full use of BMW Brilliance's parts recycling and dismantling center, the Cangzhou Reverse Logistics Recycling Center (RLP), further improves the traceability of spare parts from dealer stores, through logistics centers and aftermarket parts distribution centers, and finally to reverse logistics recycling centers.

BMW is also committed to minimizing the transport distance in the logistics of aftermarket spare parts, thereby reducing overall energy consumption. In the future, BMW Brilliance will continue to improve the localization of spare parts supply to reduce the demand for international transportation. In 2021, BMW's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Pioneer) certification-level aftermarket parts "green warehouse" in China, the Hefei Aftermarket Parts Distribution Center, which, together with aftermarket parts distribution centers in Beijing and Ningbo, significantly reduces the carbon footprint of warehousing operations.

Remanufacturing, the same force

Create a shared circular economy with car owners

Since 2019, BMW has gradually introduced remanufacturing business in China and continuously developed local remanufactured products. From January 1, 2021, BMW will gradually use local remanufactured products for BMW's new car warranty and three-pack service. In addition to the normal warranty return of used parts, BMW extends the scope of return of old parts to spare parts at the customer's own expense.

In BMW's after-sales service system, remanufactured parts are not simply "old for new". The local remanufactured parts placed by BMW on the market are in line with the relevant national laws and regulations and BMW's strict manufacturing process, after rigorous screening, high-quality raw materials will re-enter the production and manufacturing process, and are exactly the same as the factory standards of the new accessories, and each remanufactured part has passed the same rigorous test as the new accessories. Not only that, but remanufactured parts supplied by BMW enjoy a two-year unlimited mileage warranty consistent with the new parts. BMW also requires authorized dealers to clearly inform customers when using remanufactured parts in repair services, and the words "remanufactured" are clearly marked in the packaging and system names of all locally remanufactured parts.

In addition, BMW Customer Service & Support has been promoting the use of new packaging of high-capacity motor oils (including 5L and 209L) at dealer ends since November 2021, hoping to contribute to carbon reduction through customer support and participation. It is expected that within one year from the end of 2021, the use of large-capacity new packaging oil will be increased, saving BMW 6.5 million 1L plastic bottles of 1L oil (equivalent to 500 tons of plastic) and reducing carbon emissions by 180 tons. At the same time, BMW officially upgraded the initial installed oil of the new car to the 0W series oil. The 0W Series oils, which are rigorously certified to BMW Longlife standards, use improved ash distribution side technology to provide excellent fuel economy while meeting higher environmental requirements.

Sustainability is the cornerstone of bmw group corporate strategy and another direction for BMW's coordinated development with the Chinese environment. BMW not only leads by example, but also integrates the concept of sustainability throughout the design and development, supply chain, production, use and recycling stages, from the whole life cycle of products to achieve carbon emission reduction goals, and actively calls on every stakeholder, and even every member of society, to fully participate in green environmental protection actions. In the future, BMW will continue to promote low-carbon environmental sustainability throughout all stages of product development, manufacturing, after-sales and so on, and achieve a responsible, circular and resilient whole value chain.
