A few days ago, Mazda revealed that the brand's first pure electric SUV - MX-30 will launch an extended range version, the car will continue to use motor drive, but will add a rotor engine as a range extender, which will greatly expand the range of the car, in fact, the car will be officially released in March 2023.
The current MX-30 is a small SUV model launched by Mazda, the car has a fuel version and a pure electric version of the two power options, the overall bias is a fashion sports style, and the front face style is similar to the CX-50 of the latest family style, the front grille is smaller, and the domestic sale of Mazda also has obvious differences.
It is worth mentioning that unlike the domestic CX-30/CX-30 EV, the MX-30 adopts a very unique door opening design, which needs to open the front door first before opening the rear door, which also makes its B-pillar position relatively backward, not in the middle of the front/rear door, which can facilitate the occupants to enter the rear row.
In terms of power, the new MX-30 extender version will continue to use the motor to drive the wheels like the MX-30 EV, but will be equipped with an additional rotor engine on the front axle, which will drive the generator to power the battery/motor by burning gasoline, which will further expand the range of the vehicle.
For reference, the European version of the MX-30 EV has a pure electric range of only 250km, and after using the range extender, its cruising range will easily exceed 500km, and the maximum cruising range will be more determined by the fuel tank volume.
It is not clear the specific data of this rotor engine, but from the perspective of classic sports cars such as RX-7 and RX-8, the rotor engine has significant advantages over mainstream reciprocating piston engines in terms of volume, quality, and high-speed work efficiency. In the long run, compared with sports cars that emphasize high rotational performance, after overcoming the defects of service life, the rotor engine is undoubtedly better able to perform the work of the range extender of the hybrid vehicle.
