TSMC customer analysis: Huawei's vacated production capacity was taken away by MediaTek and US manufacturers

In the first half of 2020, Huawei was already one of the top three customers of TSMC, and even surpassed Qualcomm, becoming the second largest customer of TSMC.

But later everyone knows that since September 15, 2020, TSMC has no longer helped Huawei produce chips, so the production capacity that originally needed to be given to Huawei was released.

So the question is, which manufacturers have taken away these capacities vacated by Huawei?

Let's start with the chart, this is Q2 2020, and the whole year of 2021, the first quarter of 2022, TSMC's customer source chart, mainly showing the proportion of North America, Chinese mainland.

In Q2 2020, North America accounted for 58%, while Chinese mainland accounted for 21%. By Q1 2021, North America's share had increased to 67 percent, compared to 6 percent for Chinese mainland.

This is obviously because after Huawei is no longer its customer, the proportion of revenue contributed by Chinese mainland has fallen sharply, from 21% to 6%, and the impact of these 15 percentage points is mainly because of the Huawei incident.

However, since Q2 2021, the proportion of customer contributions Chinese mainland has risen to about 11% and has remained so. The proportion of North American customer contributions has been around 65%, and it has basically remained.

Obviously, the production capacity released by Huawei is mainly taken away by Customers in North America, such as AMD, Apple, Qualcomm, Broadcom, nvidia, etc., and MediaTek has also grabbed a lot and risen to the second place.

This is also the reason why TSMC later listened to the American dialect, because the customers in the United States contributed about two-thirds of the revenue, and naturally they had to serve the American customers well.

However, we should note that although TSMC's revenue from Chinese mainland accounts for only about 11%, this 11% is not a lot, according to the 2021 TSMC annual revenue of 355 billion yuan to calculate, 11% is equivalent to 39 billion yuan.

SMIC's annual revenue in 2021 is only 34.6 billion yuan, which shows that the money TSMC earns in Chinese mainland is even higher than SMIC's annual revenue.
