U.S. chip control declines again? It has become 54% in 2021, and the Chinese mainland has dropped to 4%.

From 2021 onwards, the world has entered a chip shortage, and many countries have stopped production due to chip problems when manufacturing some high-end products. Even the United States, the world's chip power, cannot escape the dilemma of the chip shortage.

The mainland has been under pressure in terms of chips, and now the mainland's chip market share has dropped to 4%, and the future scenario is precarious, but the United States has also fallen to a control rate of 54%. What happened in between, and why is there a global chip shortage?

First, there is a global chip shortage

In recent years, the most mentioned should be the chip problem, whether it is domestic reports or international reports, the news about chips is innumerable. Why can chips attract global attention in the 21st century? And every country seems to be researching and developing for its own chips, and some countries even spend a lot of money and material resources to invest in the chip industry.

What is a chip? I believe that many people's concept of chips is very vague, simply speaking, chips are like the motherboard of computers, referring to the carrier of integrated circuits. In many fields, chips can play a vital role, especially in the special industries of defense and aviation, chips are an important component of operation.

Chips first appeared in the 1950s, by Jack Kilby and Robert Neuess jointly invented the integrated circuit board, until today the chip has completed the qualitative transformation. Now many fields need to use chips, such as medical, automotive, electronic equipment, manufacturing, etc., chips have become an important object.

Chips are also divided into many levels, the most obvious is the chip comparison on the mobile phone, like the United States Apple mobile phone, its motherboard is to take the most advanced chip, but also independently developed, most of the other mobile phone brands are to take the United States manufactured ordinary chips.

Since the globalization of the epidemic, the chip industry has entered a shutdown phase, resulting in a chip shortage in many countries around the world. Especially in some developed countries, the demand for chips is extremely large. One of the important reasons why there is a global chip shortage is from the epidemic, because many countries that rely on manufacturing income are facing the problem of shortage and blockade, and once these countries do not have chip parts, they cannot complete a complete chip.

Chips in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom are produced by other countries, and they are only responsible for providing technology. Last year, there were media reports on Apple in the United States, after the release of 13 series of products, due to the shortage of chips, resulting in refund processing in multiple regions, the entire fourth quarter of revenue directly reduced by 30%.

Second, independent chips are difficult to achieve

The current independent chip research and development of the mainland has entered a stage of rapid development, but due to various reasons, the research and development progress in the past two years has been much slower. Especially in the research and development of high-end chips, many countries are also difficult to break through technical problems, and the mainland is currently in the high-end chip market, there are very few hands.

Why is it so difficult to develop high-end chips in mainland China, and what are the problems in it? On the contrary, some European and American countries are thriving in the research and development of high-end chips, and they can have enough power in the global market.

According to the current global chip industry chain, starting from 2017, the chip market can generate more than $500 billion in transaction volume per year. In such a large-scale transaction volume, nearly 94% of the market share is firmly controlled by several countries, the first being the United States, followed by the countries in Europe and the United States, and finally Japan, China, South Korea and so on.

Like some other Asian countries, their technology in the field of chips is almost blank, and they can only be responsible for some of the manual labor of assembly and testing. It is not that these countries do not have the ability to develop independently, but that they are held in the throat and the slightest sign of budding will be immediately extinguished.

Like the mainland's Huawei Kirin chip, it is an independent research and development is also the world's first group company to use 5G technology, Huawei just launched 5G technology soon after, it was jointly resisted by the United States and several European countries.

The reason why foreign countries want to boycott Huawei, and even some countries have unreasonably detained Huawei's top management, is that they are afraid of the sudden rise of these countries and groups, breaking the cake pattern that they originally divided, and eventually causing damage to their own interests, which they do not want to see, and they will not allow this kind of thing to happen. As long as there are signs of autonomous chips in the world, they will suppress and even restrict economically from all places.

Third, the control rate of the two sides has declined

Things like suppressing chips are already commonplace, such as Japan in the 1980s, when Japan was just recovering from World War II and was determined to use high-end chips as a future development. In a few years, the chip products of Japanese companies began to appear in many countries around the world, especially almost more than 80% of companies in Europe and the United States, which used Japanese chips as the first choice.

In just two years, nearly the early 90s, the United States lost nearly $3 billion because of the chip industry, and since then the United States has begun to work with other countries to suppress Japan, resulting in Japanese chips gradually withdrawing from the market, and now it can only barely have its own market share.

In recent years, due to the gradual strengthening of the mainland's national strength, a series of follower countries led by the United States have begun to impose blockades on the mainland in some fields, resulting in some industries entering a bottleneck period. The most obvious is the chip industry, since the United States implemented a chip blockade policy on the mainland in 2021, resulting in a difficult period for the mainland chip industry.

From the data analysis of this policy implemented by the United States, although it can temporarily block the development of the chip industry on the mainland, its own chip market has also suffered a certain impact, and the chip control rate of both countries is declining.

The first is the U.S. side, which has a market share of 55.4% throughout 2020 and a design side of 64.3%. However, after the implementation of the chip blockade policy, the chip market share in 2021 fell to 54.3%, which was a 1% decline in the same period, although the decline was not large, but it can also be seen that the market control rate in the United States is already gradually declining.

However, in the same period, the chip market situation in the mainland did not go much better, from the original 5% share to 4% today, and the design ratio fell from 16% to 10%. In this situation, the mainland still has not come out of the chip dilemma, and it will take at least five to six years to achieve the step of independent research and development.

summary

Now the construction of many high-end instruments are the need for powerful chips, such as mobile phones, medical, aviation and other fields, are relying on chips as the basis for development, if a country is controlled by the lifeblood of chips, then in the future for a long time can not get practical breakthroughs. The mainland is now also strengthening the independent research and development of chips, hoping to completely realize chip freedom in the near future, what is your opinion on the global chip crisis?
