pity! Affected by US sanctions, Huawei HiSilicon revenue fell 81%

Recently, research institute Gartner officially released the 2021 global semiconductor research report. The report shows that global semiconductor revenue will total $595 billion in 2021, an increase of 26.3% over 2020.

"The events behind the current chip shortage continue to affect original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) around the world, but the rise of 5G smartphones combined with strong demand and rising logistics/raw material prices has driven an increase in the average selling price (ASP) of semiconductors, contributing to significant revenue growth in 2021," said Andrew Norwood, vice president of research at Gartner.

In the global semiconductor enterprise market share ranking, Samsung Electronics surpassed Intel for the first time since 2018, with revenue reaching $73.197 billion. However, Samsung's surpassing Intel this time is not large, only less than one percentage point. In 2021, Intel's revenue fell by 0.3% to $72.536 billion, with a market share of 12.2%, while Samsung's market share was 12.3%.

The third place, SK Hynix, will only have about half of Intel's operating income in 2021, and its market share will be only half of Intel's. However, compared with 2020, it still achieved an increase of 40.6%.

The next few are Micron Technology, Qualcomm, Broadcom, MediaTek, Texas Instruments, Nvidia and AMD.

The biggest change in this list is that HiSilicon suddenly fell out of the top 25.

"As a result of the sanctions, HiSilicon's revenue fell by 81 percent last year, from $8.2 billion in 2020 to $1.5 billion in 2021." Andrew Norwood, vice president of research at Gartner, said.

"This has also affected China's share of the semiconductor market, which fell from 6.7% in 2020 to 6.5% in 2021."

Automotive and industrial market demand in 2021 is strong, compared to a weak market in 2020. The automotive market outperforms all other end markets, growing 34.9% in 2021. Wireless communications, dominated by smartphones, increased by 24.6 percent. In 2021, the number of 5G mobile phones reached 556 million units, a lot more than the 251 million units in 2020, and enterprises upgraded their Wi-Fi infrastructure for employees returning to the office.

Driven by DRAM, semiconductor sales accounted for 27.9% in 2021, experiencing 33.2% revenue growth, an increase of $41.3 billion over the previous year. Over the past few years, memory has continued to benefit from a major demand trend – the shift to home/blended work and study. This trend has driven hyperscale cloud service providers to increase server deployments to meet the needs of online work and play, as well as the surge in demand for PC and hyper-mobile terminals.
