In 2021, BMW's Shenyang production site hit a new production record under many challenges, making BMW the first domestic high-end automobile manufacturer with a production volume of more than 700,000 vehicles. The Dadong plant produces three major car series for the Chinese market, including the BMW X5, BMW X3 and BMW 5 Series. It is also the only plant for BMW to supply pure electric BMW iX3s to the global market.

Tiexi factory products include BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW X1 and BMW X2. In the summer of 2022, BMW's third automaker in Shenyang will be completed as scheduled, and BMW's new BMW i3, the first pure electric medium-sized sports sedan tailored for the Chinese market, will be put into production here.

At that time, BMW will have four plants in Shenyang – three vehicle plants and one powertrain plant that can produce power batteries and internal combustion engines. Since 2010, the joint venture BMW Brilliance has invested about RMB 83 billion in Shenyang to build a production system integrating R&D, procurement, powertrain and vehicle production, and make Shenyang the world's largest production base for the BMW Group.

With the continuous expansion of the Shenyang production base, BMW Brilliance will further promote the high quality and sustainable development of China's automotive industry, and support the development of high-end manufacturing and industrial transformation and upgrading in Liaoning and Shenyang.

Digitalization and sustainability drive high-quality development

The Product Upgrade Project of the Dadong Plant covers an area of 910,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of 125 football fields. The upgrade project has a complete four major process workshops, including stamping, body, painting workshop, and single-roof logistics and assembly workshop with two independent production lines. The body shop is equipped with KUKA's largest TITAN robot, with a load capacity of up to 1.3 tons, which is able to grasp the body deftly and ensure the stability of the body with a repeat accuracy of 0.1 mm.

Once again, the Dadong plant has significantly increased the level of digitalization. Data science, artificial intelligence and virtual planning are opening up new frontiers for automotive production, making production faster, more precise and more transparent, while taking efficiency, flexibility, sustainability and quality to a whole new level. Throughout the production process, process control and various parameter data are monitored and analyzed in real time, so that potential problems can be quickly identified and solved.

Upgrading projects have also further increased investment in sustainability. Nine new dedicated railway lines were added at the Dadong plant, ranking first in the BMW Group's global production system. At present, nearly 80% of the complete vehicles in Shenyang production base are transported by rail, which greatly reduces the CO2 emissions caused by traditional transportation methods.

In addition, scrap aluminium and scrap are recycled separately in the press shop for recycling, making a significant contribution to further reducing CO2 emissions. At the same time, the paint shop of the Dadong plant expansion project has also realized 100% renewable water for the process, and the energy efficiency will be further improved in the future.

The solar photovoltaic system in the Dadong plant area has also been upgraded. In 2022, 179,000 square meters of solar panels are expected to generate more than 21 MWh of renewable energy. At present, the Shenyang production base has 290,000 square meters of solar panels, ranking first in Liaoning enterprises.
