I heard that Gojo Renko is going to publish a collection of novels this year?

Compared with music, writing is more revealing of the creator's temperament

Toward the end of filming, Renko shook the movie poster in his hand and said, I can fold it on a paper airplane! The movie poster of the five people was stacked into a paper airplane, which flew several times in the hand, and the photographer captured it several times, or the best for the first time.

When we came out of the dark auditorium and sat down to start the interview, we realized that it was just snowing outside the window, and Renko bounced up and looked out: there was snow outside! Hurry up! Take a shot!

In the movie hall, I watched the three short films of "The Poet Next Door", "Southern Love Song" and "Story Club", "The Poet Next Door" was directed by Zhang Xiaozhou and starred by Gojo Ren, and "Southern Love" was directed by Ren Kedang, and the band members and friends participated, both of which were in the form of trailers.

"Story Club" appeared earlier, several years ago, five people came out, in which a serious interpretation of the underworld storm, specially placed before the performance, the camera ended with Ah Mao's face as a bounty hunter, sitting by the fire and pulling up a salted fish worn on a branch, and then the camera went black, and all the members of the band took the stage, dressed up as in "Story Club", and began to perform.

Southern Love

It's a lot of five people. In 2021, a double album was released, taking "Live Fish Going Upstream, Dead Fish Following the Waves" as yang, "Half True Feelings Revealed, Half By Performance" as yin, and a song interpreting different styles, saying that it is to combine yin and yang, twin double-click. This is also a five-way person. As soon as the lights hit, Renko on the side of the five people was like a fish on the stage, and with guitarist Amao, it was not enough not to get something different on the stage, and now many listeners who were fed by the Northern Independent Band were also familiar with their southern smell.

But Renko has another side.

Renko wrote novels. Basically a short story. One of them, "The Singer and the Ancient Puzzle Boy," is less than a thousand words long, neatly written about a singer who was stabbed to death by a bastard for a small matter. It's the kind of humble tragedy that you hear from time to time in the county seat.

Another article is called "Globe", which writes about a person's moment, a clean and simple white sketch, and at the end he writes: In the darkness, the globe is getting brighter and brighter. For a moment, I thought: If I could have a globe when I was a child, a globe that would glow, then the trajectory of my life would be absolutely different- I instantly understood that fate is actually so simple.

Renko's novels are not long, as simple as possible, deliberately convergent, and after reading it, you can find that he likes to read writers like Bukowski, Carver or Hemingway, and values the power of simplicity and directness.

When it comes to talking, he has indeed seen a lot of Bukowski, and also watched the movies with him as the protagonist, but he hopes to replace robert niro to play the writer himself; he also loves to read new French novels, like Jean-Philippe Tucson, Alain Robert-Grillet, the new novel is to question the traditional novel, deconstruct the narrative, examine the word order and meaning, the modernity of the text is not found in Chinese novels, and the lyrics can have a relatively tolerant space to include.

He also strongly recommended Olivier Roland, a French writer who was once very left-wing, recommending "Lion Hunter", "The Suite of the Crystal Hotel", "Paper Tiger"; he also liked Li Spector's "Star Hour" and Zhang Ailing's "Little Reunion" and "Yang Song". Especially talking about "Little Reunion", Renke said that the more it is written later, the better, the picture is cut back and forth, there is a sense of lens, the writing is very flying, the feeling of montage.

Story Club: The Hunt

People who like literature are sensitive in writing, and it is difficult not to try to write it themselves. Although Renke said that he did not read many books, he could open a bunch of books, and writing was enough with a pen, he wrote intermittently. One part of it is seen by everyone, falling into the lyrics, and the other part is hidden in their own books.

Until 2008, a reporter from City Pictorial interviewed Renke, and at the end of the interview, the reporter asked what he was doing recently, and Renke said that he was writing a novel. The other party asked to see it, and said that it could be published in the "City Pictorial". Later, I really sent it and gave a good fee. The magazine asked him to continue writing, but Gojo had just sent out "County Town" and had no time to tour. And one of the more fundamental reasons is that he had a certain reverence for literature at that time, and felt that it had a height, could he write it himself?

"I don't know where this idea comes from. Of course, from the specific text, I can tell whether it is good or not, whether it is artificial, pretentious, and there is no aura at all, but I did not write it at that time, because I felt that it was not enough, it was marginal, and it did not reach the center of literature. Wrapped up in this idea, I don't know where this idea comes from. Renko repeated again.

What exactly is a person affected, to what extent is affected, and how to reflect on this boundary. As long as one is involved in creation, one should naturally think about these questions, and then this process will be revealed in the work, like a secret path, leading to all levels of the heart. Compared with the band, writing is more revealing of the writer's temperament, leaking sentimentality, doubting to show doubt, sober to break sober. In the short story, there is a Renke who does not often show people.

The Poet Next Door

This other side may have been covered by Renko for a long time, and he does not necessarily speak a southern accent and is wary of witty words. It was the one who stood a little farther away from the stage. It's a bit like listening to Teresa Teresa singing "My Way", very self-contained, but not just herself.

Listening to the music of the Five People, you will notice the sensitivity of Renko's writing words, the choice and combination of words, reaching the listeners faster than the notes, stirring up ripples faster than the ears, simplicity and conciseness are choices, not only natural. Lyrics need to consider the function of chanting, to give way to some of the space for musical expression, but sitting down to write a novel is the sharpest moment of one's ego, and possibly the most shy moment.

Writing was very attractive to Renko, and even when he wasn't writing, he was thinking about it. Sit down to construct the details, write and look back, and you will be in those spaces again, quite secret pleasure.

The outer world swirled like a kaleidoscope, and the glass shattered and fell on the dust of the world, and Renko's practice was to pick up the shards of the people and hand them to the invisible people. The sporadic appearance of ordinary people is no different from the plastic bag on the road, but even the sloppy life is also eager to know what will happen next.

The excitement of being word-driven, subtle in its meaning, and triggering novelty with small substitutions and changes may be an instinct for Renko—we can even see some clever moves in his lyrics. Whatever the form, the words will always hook him.

This year, the Mill Iron Publishing House came to the door and asked Renke to collect these short stories out of the book, he began to sort out the short stories that had been written intermittently in the past few years, and found that some of them were not bad, and they could form a certain echo between them, one character corresponded to another, and the crowd rushed to the street to form an independent atmosphere.

A magical moment for a writer. Ideas are born out of themselves, and then they are connected to each other in another place, and a new dimension unfolds. But fragments are only fragments, and will these refractions one day be connected into a long story? Renko himself opened the head of the novella twice and did not continue. Too busy, he said, to write long stories to immerse for a long time, if the mind often needs to jump out, then writing short stories is more controlled. Those two unfinished chapters were later simply dismantled. Long or unsuccessful.

Writers, musicians, are captured by great illusions, and to move forward, there is always a thirsty, unreachable part.

NN: You love to read philosophy books?

RK: Didn't read a lot, did read some, no research. Miscellaneous and miscellaneous, the earliest is more than ten years ago, see Schopenhauer to see Descartes.

NN: These two are standard for literary youth.

RK: Yes, standard, it's easy to get these books, Nietzsche read later. The earliest look has the deepest impact, and every sentence has a major impact on you. When I was seventeen or eighteen years old, I suddenly saw a sentence in Schopenhauer, "Without happiness, happiness is to reduce trouble" (to the effect), which had a great impact on you and made a lot of sense. This is different from what others say, and in very simple language, there will be a new understanding, will think about all aspects of life, it is not what people describe.

NN: I heard you're going to publish a collection of novels in Mill Iron this year?

RK: Yes, it should be within this year. They had a studio that did poetry collections and produced a lot of Bukowski's books. The matter of writing a novel is very good for me, and it is worth my serious consideration. The song "Night Is Late" on this new album is the lyrics written in 2013 and 2014 when I made the record of "Guangdong Girl", and I threw it aside and forgot it after writing it. At the end of the previous year, I was sorting out my notes, and suddenly I looked at it and found it very good, so why didn't I use it at that time? I thought it wasn't good when I didn't use it. After a few years, I feel very good, and I still feel very complete.

When I published the novel collection, I was also worried, I always felt that I would write better in the future, and I always felt that the more I read or think more, in fact, it was not. When I sorted it out, I found that I wouldn't think like that anymore, I wouldn't write like that, I wouldn't be in that state. It should be said that I still didn't dare to talk about writing before, and this year I had to talk about it, so I tried to talk about it. The novel that I want to publish this year, I want to write a self-prologue, I don't want to write, I don't know what to write, or just start.

NN: This is another talk about the uniqueness of the creator's expression, what do you think about this?

RK: It's also very subtle. If it must be different, it will lead to overcorrection, and some independent music wants to make a unique sound, and you will feel wrong after listening to it. To put it bluntly, if all are decentralized, everyone is the center, then it is possible to immerse everyone in their own stupid world, you can think of yourself as a prince, that person thinks he is a frog, or lobster, very unique, anyway, there is no way to communicate, each has its own good, then do not know what is good. So we have to be both "centered" and "centered", always pulling, "self" and "non-self", both unique and understanding the ordinary.

NN: Like immersing yourself in self-expression?

RK: Later I slowly thought a lot about this, which may become more and more complicated, and I tried to talk about it - is it language that occupies my brain and is being spoken, or do I borrow language to express it? There are also some languages that, as the times change, slowly become other meanings, positive meanings become pejorative meanings. We just said immersed in self-expression, do you really have self-expression, or are you just looking through books and looking at a lot of things that occupy your feelings?

NN: When writing, I think about this boundary, and I wonder if I am addicted to self-expression?

RK: Well, it's still going to be, especially when writing novels, it's going to be more careful, and song writing is a little bit better. When I write a novel, I think, sometimes I reflect, why should I write? Is it because it's cool to see a picture of Camus? Why would you want to do this? But once it started, especially when it was written smoothly, the ideas were drowned out again. When things go well, you forget how to start. The interesting thing is that I can't understand it, in the clouds, I can't say it clearly.

NN: Probably the motivation is complex.

RK: I also know that putting all this aside, I enjoy the process, and when you write a novel, you think about it and think it's funny. And we've also seen some writers write all their lives, die to burn, and then a friend of his doesn't burn before he can send it out. At first, you may think it's cool, it's awesome, start doing it, and then the process of doing it finds the pleasure of sinking in the middle.

NN: The language in your short stories is very simple, and there are no redundant modified words. When people write a lot, they will subconsciously use some very beautiful words, which is quite dangerous.

RK: This collided with what we just talked about, whether the words passed or you were taken away by the words. Words are magical, for example, roses, which are not just roses themselves, represent everything that symbolizes. So I later wrote novels that almost blocked out modified words and just used words to build a space to see.

NN: So you did it consciously?

RK: It was done consciously, of course, I also wrote an article that deliberately used words, overused them, but most of them blocked out a lot. For example, there is a saying in a play that if there is a gun hanging on the wall at the beginning, it will definitely be useful in the end. But if it's a modern drama, it may be useless. For example, when we make a movie, we will consider whether we want to put something here, and we also have this kind of thinking when making music.

Modifiers are like those objects, not to say that I have to block out everything, but if I want to use it, why do I use it, but I want to write it with itchy hands, or is it out of my long-term understanding of literature? By writing novels, I thought about a lot of these aspects, and of course I think that some people can use it (modifiers), but what I have thought about doing is not unconscious.

Some guitarists have good technique, and they unconsciously add some skill to it, like modifiers, which are sometimes superfluous in my opinion, but some deliberately use them this way, and they are used correctly. But the hell is, slowly you think you're conscious, but oh my God, you're influenced by thinking about something.

NN: Do you have any genres that you particularly want to accomplish?

RK: Damn, I don't have it right now. I was recently sorting out novels for publishers, ordering them, and then I found that this short story was inadvertently echoing between another short story, so I took them together and gave them a big title, and some inappropriate ones were not put in. Although it is a grocery store, not everything can be sold.

NN: You can't sell atomic bombs either.

RK: You're right, you can't sell atomic bombs. There are some collections that can't be sold either, these are old works. It's like the two of us sitting here and talking, it's a short story, the ticket seller at the door is a short story, the security guard outside is a short story, they don't constitute a long novel narrative, but they happen at the same time. It happens in the same atmosphere.
