Xiaomi Wang Xiang: The chip shortage was fundamentally solved or even reversed in the second half of the year

On March 22, Xiaomi Group released its 2021 results, and the financial report showed that the total revenue in 2021 reached 328.3 billion yuan, an increase of 33.5% year-on-year; the adjusted net profit reached 22 billion yuan, an increase of 69.5% year-on-year. Among them, the annual smartphone revenue in 2021 reached RMB208.9 billion, an increase of 37.2% year-on-year, and the annual smartphone shipment was 190 million units, an increase of 30.0% year-on-year.

According to Nikkei Asia Review, at a media briefing on the evening of the 22nd, Xiaomi President Wang Xiang said that Xiaomi aims to ship more than 200 million mobile phones in 2022, and he predicts that the global shortage of chips and components will "fundamentally" improve in the second half of the year. Among them, the supply of chips in the first quarter is still full of challenges, but the situation will improve significantly in the second quarter, and this supply dilemma will be fundamentally resolved in the second half of 2022, or even reversed.

Wang Xiang believes that despite uncertainty and geopolitical turmoil, the company is expected to achieve growth this year as it ranks in the top five of the world's top five markets and is able to balance the risks of any single market. He also downplayed the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, saying most of his smartphones and other products were not made in Europe.

IDC data shows that in the whole year of 2021, the top five manufacturers in the global smartphone market shipments are: Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo. Among them, Samsung continued to maintain the first place with 272 million units of shipments and 20.1% market share; Apple ranked second with 235.7 million units shipped and 17.4% market share; Xiaomi ranked third with 191 million units of shipments and 14.1% market share, Xiaomi's 2021 shipments increased by 29.3% year-on-year, becoming the fastest growing manufacturer in the TOP5; OPPO ranked fourth with 133.5 million units of shipments and 9.9% market share; Vivo ranked fifth with 128.3 million units shipped and 9.5% market share.

Xiaomi is the first smartphone company to say supply constraints will be largely resolved later this year. The company cites the chip shortage as the reason it failed to meet its 2021 smartphone shipments target. Even Apple, which has the strongest purchasing power among the global tech giants, struggles to deliver its iconic iPhones and iPads on time during the Christmas holidays.

Coincidentally, Xu Qi, vice president of Realme and president of China, also said in an interview this evening that the shortage of mobile phone chips has eased since the beginning of this year, and the price of some chips has been reduced, but it remains to be seen whether the overall cost of mobile phones has declined. However, due to the decline in the mobile phone market in the first quarter than expected, it is expected that the competition in the mobile phone market will further intensify in the next year.

After more than a year of severe shortages, some vendors are starting to hint that things will improve. Foxconn has said that the chip shortage will ease in the second half of the year, but also warned that inflation will have an impact on its gross margin this year. (Proofreading/Nori)
