LCA's weekend recommendations

Art historian Xu Xiaohu once said: If you can't recognize pen and ink, you can't truly understand the essence of Chinese painting and calligraphy.

This sentence is not false. No other country in the world pays so much attention to the traces of the pen. No matter how the learner changes, no matter how the painting style changes, the evolution of brush and ink always has its own internal logic, it is the basis of books and paintings, and also represents the creator's deep understanding of painting and the world, so if you understand the pen and ink, you will understand the calligraphy and painting, and even the author behind the painting and calligraphy.

Regarding pen and ink, Fan Jingzhong recorded an interesting thing:

Gao Juhan once bought a landscape painting in Japan, but due to damage, the inscription and seal are difficult to recognize ( huàn ) . After careful stylistic analysis, he believes that it came from Xie Shichen's hand. Another Chinese expert living in Tokyo painstakingly studied the inscriptions and seals and came to the same conclusion. And Wang Jiqian's exhibition volume at a glance, that is, it was judged to be Xie Shichen.

In the field of Chinese painting and calligraphy appreciation, Wang Jiqian's influence is great. He has studied pen and ink all his life, and has seen more than 10,000 ancient paintings and calligraphy, and the reason why he can identify the author of the painting at a glance relies on the familiarity with the most refined details of painting - pen and ink.

The essence of Chinese painting

Wang Jiqian and Xu Xiaohu

However, what Wang Jiqian admires is not only in appraisal and collection, but also in the instructions of many descendants such as Chinese and foreign art historians.

In 1971, Xu Xiaohu visited the 65-year-old Wang Jiqian again to learn the mysteries of Chinese painting. In the 8 years since, she has begun a long "interview", and Xu Xiaohu has gradually realized that when the history of traditional Chinese art in the early 20th century and 2300 years ended, the evolution of pen and ink behavior was not like the spiral evolution of structure in Chinese painting, but always evolved in a linear manner, without turning back.

This long conversation has a very high level of knowledge. After careful combing, in 2014, it was collected into a book, and Guangxi Normal University published it as "Painting Quotations: Listening to Wang Jiqian talk about the brush and ink of Chinese calligraphy and painting", with a high score of 8.7 in Douban.

Nearly a decade later, the 88-year-old Xu Xiaohu had a new understanding of the dialogue he had had, made a new annotation to the "Quotations of Paintings", and once again examined Mr. Wang Jiqian's interpretation of the essentials of pen and ink, which was finally published by Triptych as "Quotations from Paintings: Listening to Wang Jiqian talk about the pen and ink of Chinese painting and calligraphy" (revised edition).

Updated version

In the book, there are not only two people's discussions about pen and ink, pen and qi rhyme, but also dialogues involving the cases of artists such as Shen Zhou, Ni Zhan, Shi Tao, Bada Shanren, Liang Kai, Wang Meng and Huang Gongwang, which are rich and profound as a whole.

Compared with the old version, the updated edition published this time has more text, a larger folio, and more pages, while adding Xu Xiaohu's video courses, full drawings of high-quality paintings, enlarged details, and demonstration drawings by Wang Jiqian. These pictures can intuitively show the content of brush and ink described by Wang Jiqian, and through the analysis of the pen and ink behavior of these paintings, it is also possible to explore the possible creative period of each work.

One day, as more and more younger generations become familiar with the scrutiny of the pen and ink details provided in this book, a new history of Chinese painting and calligraphy will emerge, proud to join the other beautiful cultural histories of the world.
