Zhile Lou collects Chinese paintings and calligraphy

The collection of ZhileLou is most abundant in the calligraphy and paintings of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, which experienced the turmoil of changing dynasties and changing dynasties, and gave birth to many loyal and filial piety and righteous people who were "Ming relics". They cherish the pain of the subjugation of the country, and turn the thoughts and sad feelings of the homeland to the landscape, or avoid the empty door and concentrate on painting and poetry creation. Their words and deeds and the calligraphy and painting works they have left behind show a kind of bright and upright integrity and noble and extraordinary feelings. Mr. Ho Yiu Kwong deeply admired and appreciated this, so he systematically used "first character and then art" as a prerequisite for his collection, and devoted himself to searching for relevant works. The famous treasures that have been collected in the Lelou include the Bada Shanren and Shi Tao of the "Four Monks of the Early Qing Dynasty", Cheng Jie and Dai Benxiao of the "Huangshan Painting School", Guangdong Yishi Kuang Lu and Li Suiqiu, and Huang Daozhou, Fu Shan, Yang Wenxiao, Chen Hongshou, Gong Xian and other calligraphers and painters.

In addition to the "Ming Relics", zhilelou also has a rich collection of other Ming and Qing dynasty calligraphy and paintings. These include works by Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin of the "Four Houses of the Ming Dynasty", Dong Qichang's "Songjiang School" of the late Ming Dynasty, Wang Shimin and Wang Yi of the "Four Kings" of the early Qing Dynasty, and the "Eight Monsters of Yangzhou" such as Jin Nong in the Qing Dynasty, reflecting the changes and development of the Chinese painting and calligraphy world during this period.

In the process of searching for calligraphy and paintings over the years, Mr. Ho Yiu-kwong has made extensive contacts with calligraphers and painters, collectors, and some of the collections in Zhile Lou are from his friends, including Zhang Daqian and Chen Rentao, and Guangdong people such as Xiang Hanping, Li Yanshan, Huang Banruo, etc. From these 20th century calligraphy and painting works collected by Zhile Lou, we can learn about Mr. Ho Yiu-kwong's social travels and artistic friendships, and also reflect the development of calligraphy and painting in Guangdong and Hong Kong and the history of collection.

Donated to the Hong Kong Museum of Art

In 2018, the Ho family generously donated this valuable collection to the Hong Kong Museum of Art, regardless of monetary returns, but for long-term public display and educational purposes, and to share them with the public forever. The Hong Kong Museum of Art has decided, after consultation, to set up a permanent "Zhile Lou Collection of Chinese Calligraphy and Paintings" to exhibit the Collection of Zhile Lou for a long time and hold various academic and educational activities so that the public can appreciate and share these fine works.
