In December 2021, OPPO released its first self-developed chip "NPU for Imaging - Mariana MariSilicon X", unveiling the mystery of OPPO's "core". At the latest spring new product launch, OPPO brought the first flagship phone equipped with a self-developed NPU chip, the Find X5 Pro.

According to reports, Mariana MariSilicon X uses a 6nm process and a self-developed IP design to break the long-standing synergy problem between algorithms, chips and sensors, and take computational photography to a new level. The self-developed NPU has a strong hash rate and energy efficiency ratio, with a hash rate as high as 18TOPS and an energy efficiency ratio of up to 11.6TOPS/w. According to the previous summary of "Inquiring Core Voice": AI energy efficiency breakthrough, 20bit Ultra HDR, real-time RAW computing and RGBW Pro are the four technical highlights of this self-developed image chip.

The industry and consumers are concerned about what kind of image upgrade effect the self-developed NPU chip can bring.

At this launch, OPPO focused on the computing image experience presented by the Find X5 Pro, covering four aspects: chip-level 4K night scene video, chip-level HDR video, and chip-level App camera enhancement.

Specifically, the Find X5 Pro can greatly improve the shadow detail, highlight suppression and color reproduction of videos in night scenes when shooting night scenes; integrate a custom sensor IMX709 RGBW pixel arrangement to improve the dynamic range of front shooting; and in environments with almost no light, the Find X5 can still shoot video images with preserved color.

At the same time, with the help of a self-developed chip, the Find X5 Pro can improve the video streaming on the bottom of the Android camera for the first time. Through the calculation of raw data, it can help the cameras of WeChat, Douyin, Kuaishou and other apps to obtain a purer and clearer picture.

On February 18, Liu Zuohu, chief product officer of OPPO, said in warm-up for the OPPO Find X5 series on Weibo: Today, the innovation of flagship mobile phones has entered the deep water area, and the competition is the self-research ability of each company. He also said that in addition to the self-developed image NPU Mariana X, the oppo Find X5 series also uses a self-developed 3A image algorithm, which may be the most adventurous image investment in the history of Find.

Liu Zuohu believes that mobile phone images from the simple competition of high pixels, to the number of multiple cameras, and then to the later competition of the size of the outsole and the ability to calculate the image, but in fact, any single technology is not the only direction that determines the image. As a result, the Find X5 also upgrades a complete image combination of software, hardware, algorithms and chips.
