Hainan is the first to find the remains of ancient petroglyphs! The shape resembles Hercules

Recently, when the archaeological team of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted a prehistoric archaeological survey in Wangxia Township, Changjiang Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province, an ancient petroglyph remnant was found at the top of the Qiantie Cave of the Paleolithic site, which was the first time that ancient petroglyphs were found in Hainan, filling the gap of no petroglyphs in Hainan Island, and was of great academic significance for studying the distribution and characteristics of Chinese petroglyphs.

According to the archaeological team of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in mid-January this year, when the archaeological team was exploring the top of the Qiantie Cave in The Xiaxiang Township of Changjiang, Nanchang, Hainan Province, it found that there were many suspected man-made patterns on the nearly 20-meter-long rock wall of the cave.

Li Chaorong, a researcher at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: From the top of the Paleolithic site, there are petroglyph remains, which were first discovered in Hainan and are also the southernmost (geographical) remains of Chinese petroglyphs.

After the researchers collected, measured, located and registered the petroglyphs, and compared and analyzed the geological landforms where the petroglyphs remained, the color and pattern appearance of the petroglyphs, and the petroglyphs in neighboring areas, it was preliminarily judged that this group of petroglyphs was a typical ancient Baiyue ethnic rock drawing, similar to the petroglyphs found in Huashan, Zuojiang, Guangxi, and mostly depicted the squatting humanoid patterns of human gathering, hunting and totem worship at that time.

Yang Chao, deputy secretary general of the China Rock Painting Society: From the shape of the petroglyph, I preliminarily judged that it should be consistent with the Huashan petroglyph in Zuojiang, Guangxi, and the most famous image on Hainan Island called Hercules is consistent with it, which also makes up for a very important link in the petroglyphs in the entire South China Sea.

Li Chaorong, a researcher at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: In the next step, we must conduct comprehensive research. Experts in geology, environment and petroglyphs are needed to conduct in-depth research to further determine the age of the site.
