The latest foreign media report: BYD has accelerated the launch of electric vehicles in Australia through an important dealer network.

Warren Buffett-backed Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has announced the creation of a new retail and service dealer group in Australia, a partnership between EV Direct and Eagers Automotive, to accelerate the rollout of its electric vehicles across the country.

EV Direct, which owns BYD's exclusive distribution rights in Australia, has struck a deal with Eagle Automotive to become the exclusive national retailer for BYD, which launched its first electric car, the Atto 3, in Australia on Saturday.

The agreement establishes the BYD Dealer Group, in which Eagers Automotive will own a 49% stake to provide an "omni-channel retail footprint" in all major Australian markets.

The deal will enable the group to provide retail and after-sales service centres for BYD electric vehicles in all major australian markets under a national franchise agreement for an initial period of five years.

Luke Todd, founder and CEO of EV Direct, said Eagers' extensive Australian network, retail expertise and leading customer proposition would provide a solid foundation for BYD Australia's rapid expansion.

"BYD wants to grow into australia's top five car brands by sales in the next 18 months," Todd said.

"BYD's electric vehicles are known for their leading technology, excellent range and price comparable to comparable premium petrol vehicles, making them ideal for the Australian market."

The suitability of BYD cars in the Australian market is about to be tested, and this week will launch the Atto 3, a renamed version of BYD Yuan Plus, built specifically for the local market.

According to EVDirect's website, the BYD Atto 3, which will launch on Saturday night, is expected to be the first in BYD's electric car lineup, which will compete with premium gasoline vehicles for prices.

In comments earlier this week, Todd said EV Direct had invested "tens of millions" in an Australian-specific production line at a large BYD plant in China.

Wing You, bydIr's general manager for Australia, said the ev maker was impressed by Eagers Automotive's approach to providing retail solutions to meet the changing needs of car buyers.
