How far away are "zero carbon" cars? The car company will achieve this goal by 2030

Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, new energy vehicles will hardly produce greenhouse gases during driving. Therefore, since its birth, new energy vehicles have been branded with low-carbon environmental protection.

However, the industry has always had questions about this, such as new energy vehicles in the name of low-carbon environmental protection, if they ignore the emission problems in the production process, can they still be labeled as "low-carbon environmental protection"? How to reduce carbon emissions in automobile manufacturing and material selection? How far is "zero carbon" to be achieved? How can new energy vehicle companies achieve sustainable development in the whole society and even the world?

Regarding these questions, there is a pure electric brand that has been constantly pursuing answers with practical actions since its birth. It is a full-fledged advocate and practitioner of environmental protection concepts. It is from the Nordic high-performance electric vehicle brand - Polestar Polestar.

Yesterday, Polestar announced that the world's leading automotive suppliers Sweden Steel (SSAB), Hydro, ZF, ZKW, Autoliv will work with Polarstar to create a truly climate-neutral car, and by 2030 at the latest, Polestar will launch the Polestar 0 model with zero carbon emissions throughout the supply chain and all production and logistics.

A rallying action that swept the entire industrial chain of the automotive industry began.

What is the "Polestar 0 Program"?

Earlier, Polestar Company applied environmental protection materials in the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 series models, and disclosed the carbon footprint of Polestar 2, which was well received by many environmentalists.

Polestar 2 contains a pioneering environmental protection concept, so that Polestar once broke the circle, and successfully won the favor of many environmentalists.

It is not difficult to find that Polestar has been committed to global environmental protection since its inception. In April last year, Polestar Polarstar unveiled the "Polestar 0 Plan" – Polestar Polarstar will produce truly climate-neutral cars by 2030 without relying on carbon offsetting. Against this backdrop, Polestar will launch the Polestar 0 model with zero carbon emissions throughout the supply chain and all production and logistics by 2030.

Polestar 0 program

At present, Polestar Polarstar has set up a special team for the "Polestar 0 Program" and appointed Hans Pehrson, the global R&D director of Polestar, who has 30 years of engineering experience in the automotive industry, as the project leader. With a strong team and Polestar's deployment in the new energy sector, the "Polestar 0 Program" is moving forward in an orderly manner.

The assembly action of the whole industrial chain of the automotive industry

In order to realize the "Polestar 0 Plan", in addition to setting up a special team, PoleStar has also established a huge circle of friends to act together with everyone.

At present, Polestar has signed letters of intent with strategic partners in the fields of metals, safety, driving systems and electrical systems, and cooperates on various focus areas of Polaris LCA Life Cycle Assessment Report to carry out carbon reduction actions throughout the life cycle. The LCA Life Cycle Assessment Report helps identify the components and production processes that emit carbon emissions in the production of vehicles, which we will redesign to reduce and ultimately eliminate carbon emissions.

Nordic steel and metals producer SSAB plans to work with Polestar to develop "fossil fuel-free steels", which not only have the potential to replace traditional steels used in the automotive industry, but also other carbon-rich materials.

Norwegian aluminium and renewable energy company Hydro plans to develop "zero carbon aluminum" with a team of Polestar experts. Automotive system supplier ZF will work with Polaris to leverage their innovations in electric powertrains and overall system capabilities to eliminate carbon emissions and save energy.

Autoliv, a supplier of automotive safety systems, plans to work with Polestar to develop safety equipment such as zero-emission airbags and seat belts. Automotive lighting system manufacturer ZKW Group also plans to work with Polaris to develop climate-neutral electrical control systems and cable cables.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said: "We knew from the beginning that this was not something that could be done alone, so we are delighted to have assembled such a strong team of leaders in their respective fields. Polestar is responding to the climate crisis with the power of innovation and cooperation. ”

Polarstar also extends invitations to industry suppliers, researchers, universities, entrepreneurs, investors, government agencies and NGOs to exploit potential opportunities for collaboration. Building on the public appeal, Polestar will also reach out to researchers around the world through SDSN (United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network), the world's largest academic network for sustainable development, to contribute to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.

Hans Pehrson, project leader of the "Polestar 0 Project" and former head of global R&D at Polestar

Hans Pehrson, Project Leader of the Polestar 0 Program and former Head of Global R&D at Polestar, said: "We believe that climate solutions technology will evolve exponentially, and the Polestar 0 program uses new solutions that are still in the innovation phase. What's even more exciting is that the solutions we have developed are not only beneficial to the automotive industry as a whole, but also contribute to the extensive decarbonization of the manufacturing industry and society as a whole. In our lives, materials such as steel, aluminum, electronic components and rubber can be found everywhere, imagine how beautiful the day will be when the production of these materials is climate-neutral, let us make the impossible possible together! ”

Yes, the future always gives people good expectations, as 2030 approaches, the "Polestar 0 plan" continues to advance, the "zero carbon" future will eventually come, are you ready?
