Yang Tao from Xinxing is a post-95s master's student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In the study and project practice, he has been committed to exploring the direction of combining traditional Chinese culture and modern design, and has participated in major national design projects such as the special font design of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the design of the guidance logo system for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
"The first phase of the project was launched at the School of Design of cafa colleges of fine arts with research, teaching-driven projects and cross-institutional cooperation with Peking University. My undergraduate degree was visual communication design at CAAM, and then the master's degree chose the research direction of cultural heritage design, which is more in line with the needs of this project from both practice and research. So I followed my mentor Professor Hang Hai to join the course and went deep into a series of design work. Yang Tao introduced.

Chinese culture has a long history, and Chinese characters are the most representative cultural symbols. Yang Tao said: "The design of the font library is a huge and complex work, to ensure the unity of the style, it is necessary to determine the style concept in the early stage, and then it can be efficiently expanded and produced in the later stage. Part of my work consisted of the style of the 9 basic words identified in the first phase (pure ice, passionate dating), and the second phase was to carry out further expansion work on the basis of the 9 words I designed. Finally, it was handed over to Peking University Founder Company to further deepen on the basis of the fonts we made. ”

Yang Tao introduced that the visual subject of the emblem of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the "winter" character designed in the style of Xingkai, and according to the unified principle of Olympic image landscape design, the project team needs to combine the graphic structure of the emblem with Chinese calligraphy. "With the repeated revision and help of my mentor, I took inspiration from the craftsman's summary of the calligraphic font through the knife method in the Song Dynasty engraving book, combining the sense of strength of the knife and the agility of the ribbon with the sense of speed."
After two years of unremitting efforts, the design team finally successfully displayed this set of Chinese fonts in the application of the slogan release, torch relay and propaganda poster of the Winter Olympics, so that the ancient Chinese character art can convey the Chinese character culture and calligraphy aesthetics in a new contemporary style, create a winter Olympic image landscape with Chinese characteristics, enhance cultural self-confidence, and increase the cultural heritage of Chinese character art for the world Olympic culture. The experience of participating in a design project in this country has left unforgettable memories for young Yang Tao. Back in Yangtao, my hometown, I was deeply touched by the rapid changes in my hometown. "The biggest thing I feel about the changes in my hometown is the excavation of many traditional local cultures. Wisdom Park, Zen Town and Temple Street all contain a lot of traditional elements. In the excavation and design of our local Zen culture, we not only take into account the systematic expression of local uniqueness, but also integrate it well into the daily life of ordinary people, which is also what I learned from the development and construction of my hometown. I hope to make more contributions to the cultural discovery and design of my hometown through the knowledge and ability I have learned. ”
