According to the Japan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1,141 pregnant women in Tokyo were infected with COVID-19 in January, while the previous highest figure appeared in August 2021, when 611 pregnant women with new crown were confirmed, and the data in January this year was nearly twice the previous high.

Of the covid-19 pregnancies diagnosed in January, only 258 were hospitalized, and four others were recuperating at designated residential facilities. 77% (879 people) of pregnant women are home-based. Japanese media said that the beds in Tokyo hospitals are still in emergency. Akihito Nakai, executive director of the Japan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a professor at Japan Medical University, pointed out: "The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized has not decreased, and we must always be vigilant. Nowadays, so many pregnant women with new crown are recuperating at home, especially once infected in the third trimester of pregnancy, the risk of severe illness is extremely high.
