Today, the largest archaeological warehouse in Zhejiang Province has officially started

This morning, many major projects in various parts of Zhejiang Province held a groundbreaking ceremony at the same time, and the Qianjiang Evening News hour reporter participated in this one in Liangzhu, whose full name is like this - Zhejiang Provincial Archaeological and Cultural Relics Protection Base, officially started construction.

What is this base?

If summarized in one sentence, this is the largest archaeological warehouse in Zhejiang Province, with a total construction area of 37,000 square meters, equipped with modern facilities and equipment such as archaeological specimen storage, protection and restoration, analysis and testing, micro-environment control, and data storage, providing basic guarantee conditions for archaeological research, specimen preservation, display and use.

Where is the base?

This place is between the Liangzhu Museum and the Liangzhu National Archaeological Site Park. Look at a few of its next-door neighbors, all of which are big brands.

We can now go to Liangzhu Ancient City Ruins Park, and we can go to the visitor center at the south gate or the east gate. The base is on the edge of the old 104 National Highway, that is, the north end of Liangzhu Port, and the east gate of the Liangzhu Ancient City Archaeological Site Park is very close, and the south end of Liangzhu Port is the Hangzhou Branch of the National Edition Museum, and the second phase of the Liangzhu Museum, across the river from the base, which will become the core part of the Liangzhu Culture and Art Corridor.

Why build this huge archaeological warehouse? Let's start with the big picture.

In 2016, the Zhejiang Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics and the Yuhang District People's Government signed a framework cooperation agreement to build the Zhejiang Provincial Archaeological Heritage Exhibition Park (later renamed Zhejiang Archaeological and Cultural Relics Protection Base) in the Liangzhu Ruins Management Area, and to clarify the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology as the project construction unit, and the project was also included in the "13th Five-Year Plan for Cultural Development of Zhejiang Province".

This base has been brewing for 6 years. Xiang Ming, director of the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Zhejiang Province, said that the background today has also changed from 6 years ago, where is the biggest difference? Let's scratch the main points in a few documents -

On October 28, 2021, the General Office of the State Council issued the "14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection of Cultural Relics and Scientific and Technological Innovation", we look at the fifth article: improve the ability of archaeological work and the level of scientific and technological archaeology, and propose to build archaeological specimen warehouses in key areas of the country. Support units with archaeological excavation qualifications in Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Xinjiang and other provinces to build archaeological specimen warehouses in areas with rich site ruins and heavy archaeological tasks.

In the plan, it is clearly required to set the indicators for the construction of world-class archaeological institutions. As a local supporting unit, it is one of the ten major cultural relics provinces in the country.

In September last year, the Central Organization Office issued the "Notice on Strengthening the Establishment and Guarantee of Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeological Work Institutions", which clearly mentioned that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the strength of archaeology and cultural relics protection institutions in 10 major cultural relics provinces should be enriched, and Zhejiang ranked fourth among them. There are now 281 national treasure units in Zhejiang, ranking fourth in the country.

Last year, there was also a plan, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage's "14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection and Utilization of Large Sites", which mentioned that it would focus on supporting the construction of archaeological specimen warehouses in 20 national key areas, and Zhejiang was also among them.

What I just said is the background, and the core reason must be to enhance the hard core strength and make up for the shortcomings of the development of the archaeological industry.

Xiang Ming said that due to historical reasons, archaeological institutions in Zhejiang Province generally have problems such as lagging infrastructure construction, poor scientific research conditions, lack of warehouses and finishing sites, and the problem of insufficient space such as archaeological specimen preservation, restoration, and scientific research has existed for a long time, which has seriously hindered the rapid development of archaeology.

Although the existing 10 archaeological workstations of the Zhejiang Provincial Archaeological Institute have generally set up warehouses, the average area of each warehouse is less than 300 square meters, "it has long been full", pottery pieces, porcelain pieces and other organic matter specimens are particularly large, the vast majority of archaeological specimens can only be scattered in temporary warehouses around the place, not convenient for storage, research and protection, cultural relics security pressure is very large.

Xiang Ming said that after the completion of the project, there will inevitably be a qualitative leap in hardware.

Let's spoil the structure of this large warehouse, divided into four plots, four goals, you can also understand as four functional partitions.

The first is of course the most important: the establishment of the national key regional archaeological specimen warehouse (Zhejiang), which integrates the functions of centralized sorting, turnover, storage, protection and restoration, scientific research and display and utilization of excavated cultural relics specimens, and provides academic support for major projects and research topics such as "Exploring the Source of Chinese Civilization", "Archaeological China" and "Zhejiang Archaeological 'Rising Star' Plan".

The second is to build a southern base for the gene bank of ancient Chinese material culture.

Based on the gene bank of ancient Chinese material culture in Zhejiang, the Yangtze River Delta and even the southern region, it will create a platform for archaeological research and cultural exchanges in the southern region. Xiang Ming said that this gene pool represents a typical variety of specimens in a region and a time period.

So, do we ordinary people have the opportunity to come here to visit or listen to lectures?

Direction clearly stated that in the future, it can be opened in an organized and limited manner, so that the public can understand our archaeological work.

The third is the digital exhibition area of Zhejiang archaeology and Chinese civilization archaeology.

An important platform for the creative transformation of Archaeological Achievements in Zhejiang by using digital means. Tell the history of Zhejiang well to the public, empirically prove the origin of civilization, highlight cultural inheritance, and confirm the mutual learning of civilizations.

The fourth block is to create a cultural relics research and practice area. Relying on the special facilities and study and exchange places for edutainment, we will create excellent learning and practice spaces and create high-quality research projects.

Is there an archaeological university hall here? We might as well imagine it.
