Harry and Beth's story began in 1890 in Independent City, Missouri. Beth, then 5, didn't pay much attention to her Sunday school classmate Harry, but for 6-year-old Harry, she seemed to love it at first sight.

Harry's memories in the letter

"I saw a beautiful curly-haired girl there,

I was like:

This is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen.

Her skin was tanned wheat brown,

Blonde hair shining like sunshine,

And the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen in my life. ”

Harry's marriage proposal in the letter

"Water and potatoes will soon be like that

Pineapples are as extravagant as diamonds.

Speaking of diamonds,

You'll wear one on your left hand

And then let me hold it? ”

During Harry's war in Europe, the two were newly engaged and separated from each other, and strong thoughts led Harry to write more letters during this time.

In 1919

"Dear Beth,

You know my top

There are two chest-fitting pockets.

nature

You can guess my left pocket

Whose picture is treasured...

Mom's picture was on the other side. ”

"Please dress up,

As soon as I got home

Let's walk together from the church door to the altar. ”

"Except for going home,

I'm not going anywhere,

I don't have any money but love you like crazy,

It will be done.

Time and place of marriage

It's up to you,

Only one witness is invited

Or let the whole town come and participate,

It's up to you to decide,

As long as you can walk into the church as soon as I arrive,

I don't care about anything else. ”

A month later, Beth replied:

"If you will,

The entire 35th Division can be invited to our wedding. ”

From 1933 to 1945, Harry began to be a single senator, going up and down in politics. But whether on the battlefield or in the busy White House, he expressed his affection and dependence on Beth in his letters. In more than a decade, they wrote thousands of family letters to each other to record their lives in two places, and although the words were ordinary daily routines, they were full of love.

In 1933

Tomorrow I'll be 49 years old.

Looking back, I feel that there is no waste.

If possible,

I would also like to do it again.

I'm on the railroad, in the financial world

And I've done work on the farm.

It has also experienced ups and downs in the political arena,

However, I was not discouraged at all;

I believe that my lover is the lover of my dreams,

My daughter is the embodiment of her mother,

I was counting the days waiting for our reunion. ”

In 1945

"After talking to you yesterday morning,

I became more and more homesick.

Although we are 6,000 miles apart,

But you feel like you're in a corner of the house.

After the call,

I've been thinking all day,

What a meeting,

It is better to hurry home. ”

Don't worry about what I think.

I'm pretty sure you cut your hair short

As beautiful as with long hair,

I wouldn't say

If you cut your hair short, you will be sorry.

In my eyes

You are still a beautiful person who is unparalleled in the world,

So go for it.

Whether you're casually talking or joking,

You're happy,

That's what I want. ”
