Since 1994, Ward's Auto has been selecting the world's top 10 engines. The selection criteria are based on engines installed in vehicles that are still in production after the first quarter of the second year. The price standard changed from less than $55,000 to less than $60,000 in 2014.

From 2020, the name has been changed from 10 Best Engines to 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems. This is a process that evaluates and rewards the next generation of power sources in addition to the internal combustion engine according to the process of technological development.

A total of 39 engines and powertrains were tested this year, including 10 selected last year. Times are changing so fast that 18 of them are electric motors. Since the engine output may be different for each country, it is only for models with US specifications.
