AMD Corporation issued a news release saying it had obtained all the necessary approvals for the acquisition of Xilinx, including all necessary government licenses, and that the deal was expected to close around Feb. 14. On October 27, 2020, AMD reportedly announced a $35 billion acquisition of Xilinx. After the merger, AMD will own 74% of Xilinx, and Victor Peng, xilinx's current CEO and president, will join AMD as president.
Why did AMD choose Xilinx as an acquisition target? That's because, despite AMD's reputation for enterprise data centers and client computing CPUs and GPUs, the acquisition of Xilinx is expected to complement AMD's growing position in data center sales, while also opening a clear path for further expansion into new markets including aerospace, automotive, and communications infrastructure in the near term.

Therefore, the acquisition of Xilinx can help AMD seize a larger market share and get more development opportunities.
