Body length 30-46 cm, weight 224-450 g, dark brown upper body. Resident birds, usually inhabiting montane forests and foothill forest edges below 2,000 meters, also appear in bamboo forests and small areas of jungle, and occasionally move to the foothill plains and near villages. In China, it is mainly distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hainan Island and Taiwan, and is a national second-level protected animal.
