"Core Panic"! Ford's 8 factories were forced to cut production, and Toyota could not hold back?

The impact of chip shortage on the production lines of multinational car companies is still continuing.

According to Reuters, the relevant person in charge of Ford Motor said a few days ago that due to the shortage of chips, Ford Motor plans to temporarily stop production or reduce production at its 8 factories this week, which has affected the production capacity of many of its main sales models such as Bronco, Explorer, and Mustang Mach-E.

According to reports, Ford's plants in Michigan, Chicago and Kuotitlan, Mexico will temporarily stop production, and the duration of the shutdown has not yet been determined. Production lines for the F-150 pickup truck at its Kansas plant will also be suspended, and the Transit model will be produced in single shifts. In addition, ford's Dearborn plant, Kentucky plant, and Louisville plant will start single-shift production or reduce shifts, and The Oakville plant in Canada will eliminate overtime.

Prior to this, Ford motor has said that the chip shortage may lead to a decline in its car sales this quarter. Affected by this news, as of the close of trading on February 4, Eastern Time, Ford Motor (F) stock price fell 9.7% at $17.96 / share, "evaporating" nearly $10 billion in market value in one day.

Multinational car companies "core panic"

In fact, in the context of the global automotive industry's collective "chip shortage", Ford's dilemma is not unique, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and other car companies have plans to reduce production or stop production.

Toyota motor said that due to the shortage of chip supply, its global production is expected to decrease by 150,000 units to about 700,000 units in February this year. This also results in Toyota's global production in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2022, being lower than previously expected at 9 million units.

"The current demand is very strong and we had planned to increase production in February. However, as the entire industry continues to be affected by the lack of semiconductor supply, we have adjusted our production plans. We will continue to monitor semiconductor-related parts shortages and consult with all companies considering alternatives to address possible ongoing shortages. We will also continue to work with our suppliers to strengthen our supply chain and make every effort to deliver vehicles to our customers as quickly as possible. Toyota motor said.

Affected by the temporary suspension of production in January this year, Toyota Motor has readjusted its production plan for February. From 11 production lines at the previous eight plants, there are plans to stop production, and it has been adjusted to seven production lines at six plants. Among them, the most affected Toyota GR YARIS model will be discontinued for 12 days in February.

In Toyota Motor's february production plan announced earlier, 11 production lines at eight plants will face production stoppages. Specifically, the GR production line at Toyota Motor's Motomachi plant will be suspended for 12 days; the first and second production lines at the Takaoka plant will be suspended for 2 days; the first and second production lines at the Toyota Causeway plant will be shut down for 2 days; the third production line at the Tahara plant will be shut down for 4 days; the first production line at the Miyata plant will be suspended for 10 days; the first and second production lines at the Iwate plant will be suspended for 11 days; the Daihei plant in Miyagi will be shut down for 5 days; and the second production line at the Fujimatsu plant will be suspended for 13 days.

Judging from the suspension time, the earliest shutdown of the above factories began on February 1, and the latest shutdown time was February 19. The Tahara plant and the Miyata plant are the main producers of Lexus models, with ES, NX, LS, and UX all being put into operation at the above plants, while the Takaoka plant mainly produces the Corolla series.

After the latest adjustments, the number of Toyota motor plants that have stopped production has decreased. The company will have 11 production lines at the previous eight plants to seven production lines at six plants.

However, it is worth noting that there is news that toyota motor's Toyota causeway plant in Aichi Prefecture has employees infected with new crown pneumonia, which has also led to the suspension of production of the second production line in the Toyota causeway plant on February 12 and 19 within the above plan, and will also suspend production from February 20 to 22.

In fact, since the second half of 2021, Toyota has repeatedly announced the suspension of production notices. Among them, the largest shutdown involved a total of 27 production lines at 14 plants in Japan, and the longest shutdown lasted 38 days.

In addition to Japan, Toyota Motor's production in the Chinese market has also been affected. Previously, FAW Toyota confirmed that its factory in Tianjin has been affected by the epidemic, and it is understood that FAW Toyota's plant in Tianjin mainly produces models including Asiatic Lion and Crown Lufang.

Previously, the relevant person in charge of Toyota China said in an interview with the "Daily Economic News" reporter: "Because the problem of chip supply involves a relatively long industrial chain, we are paying attention to the changes in chip supply situation almost every minute and every second, hoping to solve the problem as soon as possible."

The problem of tight chip supply remains in the short term

Earlier, at a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council, Luo Junjie, spokesman of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and director of the Operation Monitoring and Coordination Bureau, said that in 2021, the global integrated circuit manufacturing capacity will continue to be tight, and all walks of life are facing the problem of "lack of core", of which the automobile industry has been the most affected, so many domestic car companies have reduced production or short-term production stoppages.

In Luo Junjie's view, the emergence of the "lack of core" problem in the automotive industry is due to the continuous improvement of social intelligence, the demand for chips as the most critical component of smart devices continues to grow; on the other hand, the spread of the global epidemic has caused a serious impact on the global semiconductor supply chain. The superposition of a variety of factors objectively caused the emergence of the problem of "lack of core".

Luo Junjie believes that with the gradual role of the market regulation mechanism, as well as the joint efforts of governments at all levels, automobile companies, and chip companies, the problem of "lack of core" in the automotive field is gradually alleviating. However, the stability of the global integrated circuit supply chain still faces severe challenges, and the supply of such chips will remain in a state of tension for a long time to come.

According to a report released by Deloitte a few days ago, the chip shortage is expected to continue in 2022, and the chip delivery period will be delayed by about 10 to 20 weeks before the situation can be alleviated by early 2023.

Huaan Securities Research Report believes that in the short term, the lack of core in the automotive industry has gradually eased, the industry has entered the recovery stage, and with the gradual improvement of the industry will enter the inventory stage, industry-related companies are expected to benefit, and it is expected that the sales growth rate of the domestic automobile market in 2022 will be 8% to 10%.
