Today, the much-anticipated 24th Beijing Winter Olympic Games (Winter Olympics) is finally here!

Beijing Shougang Park, which has been preparing for the Winter Olympics for a long time, is also bustling, if you come here now, you can not only see the Winter Olympic mascot "Ice Pier" waving at you with a bright smile, but also a handsome L4 self-driving car roaring past.

They do not have a driver in the strict sense (some vehicles are equipped with only one safety officer), but they are all equipped with lidar, cameras and other sensing equipment, analyzing real-time road conditions and responding quickly and accurately, adding color to the "Winter Olympics of Science and Technology".

Autonomous driving, the "new friend" of the Winter Olympics

The prototype of the "Winter Olympics of Science and Technology" began in November 2016, and the "Winter Olympics of Science and Technology (2022) Action Plan" led by the Ministry of Science and Technology focused on 8 aspects such as "zero-row energy supply, green travel, 5G sharing, smart spectators, sports technology, clean environment, safe competition, and international cooperation", and 80 projects have been deployed and arranged successively.

Among them, as a key project of Beijing Science and Technology Plan- all-weather multi-model autonomous driving technology development and Shougang Park function demonstration (referred to as "Science and Technology Winter Olympics Special Project"), it is a "technology brand" with a bright background for this Winter Olympics.

Professor Yang Diange, head of the Science and Technology Winter Olympics project and dean of the School of Vehicles and Transportation of Tsinghua University, once said that there are several highlights in the project:

The first is the use of AI technology in the development of vehicles;

Second, it is used in the car to use China's Beidou high-precision positioning;

Third, the application of 5G and the Internet of Vehicles in autonomous vehicles.

According to public information, shougang park will have about 100 unmanned vehicles to escort the people's transportation needs during the Winter Olympics, including:

Baidu and Superstar Future Robotaxi will provide passenger services in the park;

Shougang Park and Baidu join hands to land a driverless minibus that will connect tourists on the established route;

BAIC's self-driving fleet will provide services for multi-person tours or visits;

Segway-Ninebot's three-wheeled scooters allow people to reach their destinations lightly;

Meituan unmanned delivery vehicles and Neolithic unmanned retail vehicles are on standby for everyone's catering needs in the park;

Chi Walker's Snail Xiaobai will undertake some of the cleaning work in the park;

UBTECH's intelligent inspection robot ATRIS (Security Patrol) will replace the security personnel to patrol, actively identify strange people, and trigger the alarm function when suspicious people are found.

In fact, as early as Last April, the "Science and Technology Winter Olympics" project has reached a pre-set project assessment index, covering five aspects of vehicle, road, cloud, simulation and demonstration, and realized the demonstration application of the park's open roads, full coverage of the park's internal roads, and all-weather multi-model L4 unmanned autonomous driving.

Behind them is the technical support provided by 17 subject units such as Tsinghua University and Shougang Group.

In view of the characteristics of "mixed flow of people and vehicles and complex traffic scenes" that may occur during the Winter Olympics, Tsinghua University has cooperated with companies such as Futian, Baidu and Zhixing to create an intelligent car driving operating system and an electric vehicle platform that supports automatic driving.

In addition, the safety guarantee of automatic driving is inextricably linked to the high-precision map, and the sensor is used to achieve high-precision positioning and improve the efficiency of vehicle perception, thereby optimizing the navigation path. However, it should be noted that during the Winter Olympics, the snow season is in place, and the difficulty of lane-level positioning has increased significantly, and how to respond to unexpected situations is also a major challenge.

With the support of HIGH-definition maps, these problems will be "not worth mentioning". At present, the collection of high-precision maps in the Shougang Park of the Winter Olympics is also in full swing.

High-precision maps allow autonomous vehicles to "add wings", as if they have a "golden eye of fire", can know the location information in advance, accurately identify hundreds of targets such as traffic signs and markings, accurately plan driving routes, and make judgments and decisions in advance. Even in extreme weather conditions such as snow and fog, vehicles can be accurately positioned in an orderly manner. It acts like a reliable safety officer, helping autonomous vehicles avoid situations such as inaccurate accuracy and increased measurement errors due to abnormal conditions.

The long-term development of autonomous driving is inseparable from intelligent networking. With the support of intelligent network technology, the Winter Olympics have created infrastructure such as special lanes for autonomous driving, wireless charging stations, and intelligent traffic lights, forming a mobile and replicable autonomous driving park template. Efficient and intelligent vehicle networking technology research and demonstration projects are also a major attraction of the "Winter Olympics of Science and Technology".

With the cooperation of 5G, AI, IoT and other technologies, 17 5G base stations, 14 roadside units (RSUs) and 1 Beidou foundation enhancement station have been "carpeted" in the park, with a total area of 1 million square meters. Based on this powerful 5G intelligent vehicle networking system in the park, the unmanned delivery business demonstration has been carried out at the Winter Olympic venues in Zhangjiakou.

Autonomous driving, the "old acquaintance" on the sports field

In addition to the Winter Olympics, autonomous driving has not been absent in other international events held by the mainland in recent years, and has become one of the new business cards of the mainland's high-tech development.

In the 7th World Military Games in 2019, Yuanrong Qixing and Dongfeng Motor Company Technology Center cooperated in developing a Robotaxi for connection services;

On August 18, 2021, Shaanxi Automobile's self-driving bus debuted at the 14th China Games, the 11th China Paralympic Games and the 8th Special Olympics Torch Relay;

During the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, Geely Automobile will fully realize autonomous driving in the Asian Games region and create a smart community for the future;

At the 31st Summer Universiade in 2022, the Mushroom Car Federation's Robotaxi, Robobus, patrol cars, sweepers will show their faces...

And other countries on the other side of the ocean, international competitions are also an excellent stage for them to show high-tech and future ideas.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, we were able to learn about the new technology trends such as anti-Seka sportswear, 8K TV, VR broadcasting, and Visa mobile payment rings.

But the most amazing thing is the swimming "BMW" - with the dynamic tracking system of BMW's autonomous driving technology, the LED light groups originally used in mass production cars have been transformed and embedded on the wrists, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles of athletes, and the light groups can track and record their swimming movements. Athletes, including Michael Phelps, have also used the technology to help improve and strengthen training.

At the Tokyo Olympics, which just ended last year, Toyota slammed $835 million and signed a top sponsor contract with the International Olympic Committee. In order to be able to "show off the muscles", Toyota invests trillions of yen every year for the research and development of cutting-edge technologies such as electrification and intelligence, just to make a splash at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

In terms of automatic driving, Toyota's L4-level e-Palette self-driving minibus has the "eye contact" function between the vehicle and the pedestrian and the automatic perception function of the pedestrian, so as to actively avoid pedestrians.

Another APM model is a low-speed electric vehicle capable of providing short-distance mobility services, which is also used for connection.

There are also nearly 100 standing EVs for patrolling and moving security personnel centered on the main venue of the Tokyo Olympic Games. In addition, Toyota has introduced Field Support Robots, which can quickly and safely retrieve sports equipment on the field.

Risks often coexist with opportunities, and large-scale events can also become gladiatorial arenas for "eternal hatred" when they are missed. At the Tokyo Paralympic Games that same year, Toyota's proud AI technology caused a catastrophe: a self-driving minibus with a speed of 1-2 kilometers per hour injured the visually impaired judo athlete Kitaen Shin-mitsu (30 years old) and withdrew from the race.

The car that caused the accident was the e-Palette driverless minibus, which was regarded as a proud work. For this reason, Akio Toyoda had to personally apologize, "This incident shows that it is not realistic for self-driving cars to drive on ordinary roads." ”

After all, it is the focus of the world's attention, and an injury accident is enough to hit human confidence in AI technology, push the safety problem of autonomous vehicles to the cusp of the storm, and give the industry a warning.

Technology makes the Olympics more dazzling, cooler and broader

I don't know when it started, the Olympic arena is no longer only athletes sweating, chasing gold and silver figures, a large number of high-tech vehicles and new mobile devices are gradually emerging, artificial intelligence, holographic projection and other "black technology" emerges in an endless stream.

Modern sports competitions are by no means a "battle" for one person. Just as AI and big data are intertwined, technology and the Olympics seem to have become a community that goes hand in hand.

While stimulating the fighting spirit of athletes and challenging the limits of human body, the Olympic Games also imply a scientific and technological contest between countries.

People are increasingly aware that investment in technology can help athletes break the gap in the monopoly of other countries, reduce injuries, and scientifically explore higher, faster, and stronger human limits.

Traditional sports training mainly relies on the "passing on" between coaches and athletes, similar to the inheritance process of "craftsman" skills: coaches provide methods based on personal knowledge and experience, but they are not suitable for each individual, and training methods based on independent analysis of athletes can stimulate everyone's potential.

Last year, Su Bingtian broke the Asian men's 100m sprint record in 9.83 seconds. He once combed the reasons why China's men's 100-meter sprint ranked among the top in the world, the first of which was to "practice the concept of scientific training".

In Su Bingtian's daily training, the computer bionic simulation gave many aspects of data such as the angle of the knee joint during preparation and the step length when running. Through the assistance of high-tech such as biochemical analyzers and artificial intelligence analysis systems, the posture and actions of athletes are recorded in an all-round way to create personalized and data-based training programs. This "science-led" training method has significantly improved the training effect of Su Bingtian, who retired due to injury and illness, and extended the peak period of sports. At the age of 32, who is regarded as the "advanced age" of the athlete, he ran his personal best in one fell swoop.

This is not an exception, the mainland's high-achieving swimming and rowing teams also have a "killer skill" - the buff blessing of China's "wind tunnel" technology. The "wind tunnel" is actually an overflow of aerospace technology. As a research fighter, missile and other aircraft that encounter airflow problems, it is also suitable for athletes who encounter water flow or air flow obstructions. The way to improve athletes' performance through targeted training through "wind tunnels" is also very popular in Britain, Germany, the United States and other countries.

Looking back at the table tennis women's singles final on July 29, 2021, Sun Yingsha and Ito Mimachi had a back-and-forth fight. Every serve, swing, movement and other data of Ito Mimachi was collected and received by the technical team of the "Zhejiang University Table Tennis Intelligent Big Data Analysis Platform" more than 2,400 kilometers away, and almost at the moment of the end of the game, the AI cloud platform has pushed the tactical data analysis report generated by the algorithm to the mobile devices of the coaches and athletes of the Chinese table tennis women's team. These data records will be directly used for the follow-up preparation of the Chinese women's table tennis team.

There are also sophisticated equipment such as micro-compression oxygen chamber, pressurized cold therapy instrument, floating barn and other sophisticated equipment for the Chinese weightlifting team to win 7 gold medals in Japan; the large amount of data provided by the readiness monitoring system is the "secret weapon" for the mainland rowing team to continuously break through; the final simulation system is the "key" for the Chinese shooting team to play a beautiful turnaround battle at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium; the scientific and medical composite team is the "magic weapon" behind the Chinese swimming team's repeated gold wins;

The excellent achievements of Chinese sports are inseparable from the strong support of the scientific research team. As the movie "Win the Championship" said: "The future of sports does not rely on people, but on technology." ”

It is expected that our self-driving players can better move from the "ice and snow stage" to the international stage under the opportunity of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
