Diao Xiaoping said that although the global coral reef covers less than 2% of the seabed, it provides food and habitat for at least 1/4 of the marine life on the earth. The global coral reef ecosystem consists of about 800 species of reef-building corals, 4,000 species of fish, and a large population of invertebrates and microorganisms. There are more than 100 species of reef-building corals distributed in the coastal waters of Hainan.
However, in recent years, due to global climate change, rising temperatures, and the impact of human activities, such as corals being eaten by polyps, organic pollutants such as microplastics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides have also damaged the ecological environment of corals, and the coverage of coral reefs around the world has decreased significantly. In the face of global climate change and other factors, the protection of coral reef ecosystems in Hainan is also facing challenges.
"Protecting coral species diversity is of great strategic and practical significance, so I think Hainan should strengthen the conservation of coral species diversity, mainly from five aspects." Diao Xiaoping said.
The first is to consider the construction of a living coral germplasm resource bank (land-based marine ranch) in Sanya or Sansha City, collect and breed live samples of all reef-building coral species existing near the coast of Hainan and the South China Sea, and carry out coral genetic resources and reproductive biology research, so that rare coral biological resources can be preserved and continued. When damaged or exposed reefs need to be replanted, samples can be taken from them for replanting.
The second is to establish a coral gene bank, carry out genome sequencing of Hainan dominant reef-building corals, and establish a database of the whole genome and transcriptome of a variety of characteristic corals, laying the foundation for the auxiliary genetics, environmental adaptability research and ecological restoration of corals, and the cultivation of super corals.
The third is to carry out normalized monitoring of environmental and species diversity in coral reef areas. It is recommended that the relevant departments of Hainan Province organize universities and scientific research institutes to carry out normal monitoring of the water quality and coral species diversity of the sea water near Hainan and the coral reefs of the South China Sea.
The fourth is to build an international open scientific research platform, make use of the advantages of the established coral gene bank and simulated breeding ecosystem, attract international coral biologists and environmental scientists to carry out research, promote international exchanges and cooperation, and jointly provide scientific basis and technical support for the protection of coral species diversity.
Fifth, the government and social resources cooperate to build a science popularization education base for living coral germplasm resources, enhance the awareness and knowledge of social protection of corals, reduce pollution, and allow social forces to participate in the protection of coral species diversity.
