At the Mashishan Ten Warriors Memorial Hall in Rushan, Weihai, there is a monument with a square body and a spire. It records the names of the heroes who died in the Battle of Mashishan. On the side of the stele is an inscription written by Jiang Weibin, a graduate of Haiyang Normal School, in the 32nd year of the Republic of China, praising the anti-Japanese soldiers and civilians of Mashishan Mountain: "Loyalty, righteousness, courage, tragedy, and greatness are really rare in ancient and modern China and abroad." ”

In 1942, the War of Resistance behind enemy lines was in its most difficult period. The Japanese North China Front carried out a brutal drag-net-and-encircle sweep of the Jiaodong anti-Japanese base area, not falling into a village or household, not leaking a mountain or a ditch, and "searching for grates" in front. On November 23, the Japanese army created the heinous "Mashishan Massacre".

At the time of the bloody massacre of the Japanese army, thousands of people gathered on Mashi Mountain. Some of them came from Laiyang, Haiyang, Muping, Qixia, Fushan and other places, but more were villagers around Mashishan. Some hold nursing children, some support elderly parents, some carry bags on their shoulders, pull donkeys... Accompanied by the bombardment of aircraft, the Japanese puppet army rushed to this place in the mountains. Suddenly, the sound of machine guns, rifles, and grenade explosions on the entire Mashi Mountain was connected.

Just as the masses were having no way out and were waiting to die, 10 heavily armed Eighth Route Army fighters suddenly came from the west. People seemed to have met a savior, and Ma Tu surrounded him. When the warriors saw the scene in front of them, their blood rushed and they shouted, "Folks, don't be afraid!" With us, there are everyone!"

The 10 fighters belonged to the Thirteenth Regiment of the Fifth Brigade of the Shandong Column, and under the leadership of the squad leader Wang Dianyuan, they rushed in and killed at night, three in and three out, and rescued thousands of people from the siege. By the time they broke through the encirclement for the fourth time, the Japanese were approaching the top of the hill. 10 men fought fiercely from 4 a.m. until dawn, and finally only the squad leader and two soldiers were left, and when the enemy rushed up, 3 people hugged each other tightly and pulled the last grenade.

In the martyrs' cemetery next to the memorial, we see the names of these warriors. They are: Wang Dianyuan, Zhao Tingmao, Wang Wenli, Li Gui, Yang Depei, Li Wuzhai, Gong Zifan, and three others who can't even find their names, and their tombstones only have the title of "Ten Warriors".

Through the smoke of history, we can faintly hear the cries of heroes echoing in the valley. The bloody years have become a thing of the past; Emotions thicker than water converge into eternal memories. The warriors of Mashishan, a historical monument forged with their lives and blood, will forever stand in the hearts of the people of Jiaodong.
