The 2021 ACM Fellow 71-man "big list" has just been released.

Professor Tang Jie of Tsinghua University, Liu Tieyan, Vice Dean of Microsoft Academy of Asian Studies, Li Feifei of Alibaba Cloud and Professor Xie Tao of Peking University were elected as four mainland scholars.

It is worth noting that Xie Tao's election means that he, like his brother Xie Yuan, has become a Chinese scholar who has been elected as a Fellow of the three top international societies (ACM, IEEE, AAAS) at the same time.

This is one of the few in the world.

Who is Xie Tao?

Professor Tao Xie was a full professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and has been awarded a tenured teaching position.

He is currently a chair professor at the School of Computer Science of Peking University and the deputy director of the Key Laboratory of High-Credible Software Technology (Peking University) of the Ministry of Education.

Born in Hezhou, Guangxi, he was admitted to Fudan University in 1992 with the third place in the Guangxi Science College Entrance Examination.

He then received a master's degree in computer science and technology from Professor Mei Hong at Peking University.

Two years after graduating from Peking University, Xie Tao went to the United States to study and received a master's and doctoral degree from the University of Washington.

As soon as he graduated with his Ph.D., he entered North Carolina State University as an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, where he was promoted to associate professor for tenure a year in advance.

Eight years later, in 2013, Xie Tao came to UIUC to teach, and in 4 years he rose from tenured associate professor to full professor.

In 2018, Xie Tao was elected as an IEEE Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a year later, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS Fellow), and he has just been selected as a 2021 ACM Fellow, and has gathered three international summits.

Xie Tao's main research areas include software engineering, system software, software security, and trusted artificial intelligence, and he has published more than 200 papers in the past decade.

As one of the first Chinese winners, he won the most influential paper of ASE 2021 at the International Summit of Software Engineering.

In addition, Xie Tao's awards and honors include the Science Exploration Award, the National Natural Science Foundation of China Overseas Outstanding Youth Science Fund and its continuing funding, the Microsoft Research Outstanding Collaborator Award (one of the 32 awarding professors in the world, one of the 3 Chinese winners), the Microsoft Research Software Engineering Innovation Foundation Award, the Google Professor Research Award, the Facebook Research Award, the IBM Jazz Innovation Award, the IBM Professor Award...

For his outstanding contributions and services to the software engineering community, he is also the only scholar in the world to receive both the 2021 ACM SIGSOFT Outstanding Service Award (one of SIGSOFT's three annual awards) and the 2020 IEEE Computer Society Software Engineering Technical Committee Outstanding Service Award (one of the four TCSE annual awards).

The brothers recreate the good story

Mention Xie Tao, you have to mention his brother Xie Yuan.

Who is Xie Yuan?

Guangxi Junior Tiannian (1991 Guangxi College Entrance Examination Science No. 2), Tsinghua Electronics Department notable alumni, Princeton University Electrical Engineering Master's and Doctoral Degree graduates, UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) professor, Ali Pingtou Brother Bull, Architecture Top Hall of Fame Grand Slam winner...

The brothers are full-fledged academic bullies and big cattle in their respective fields of expertise.

In 2019, Xie Yuan and his younger brother Xie Tao were selected as AAAS Fellows, creating a good story.

However, the older brother was selected as an IEEE Fellow four years earlier than the younger brother and two years earlier by the ACM Fellow.

But now, this does not prevent the brothers from becoming Chinese scholars who have been elected to the membership of these three top international societies at the same time.

Re-enactment!

Tang Jie and other 3 mainland scholars were also selected

In addition to Xie Tao, Professor Tang Jie of Tsinghua University, Li Feifei of Alibaba Cloud, Liu Tieyan, Vice President of Microsoft Research Asia, and three mainland scholars who are also new ACM Fellows.

Professor Tang Jie can be said to be everyone's "old acquaintance".

Let's briefly introduce him:

Professor Tang received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Technology from Tsinghua University in 2006, was elected IEEE Fellow in 2020, and is now a professor and deputy head of the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University, and the director of the Tsinghua-Academy of Engineering Joint Laboratory for Knowledge Intelligence.

Research interests include artificial intelligence, data mining, social networking, machine learning, and knowledge graphs.

So far, he has published more than 300 papers, won the ACM SIGKDD Time Test Award, and google scholar cited more than 21,000 times.

The results we are most familiar with include the ultra-large-scale pre-training model "Enlightenment" (with a parameter scale of more than 1.75 trillion) that he led and developed, and the researcher AMiner, a social network mining system.

His virtual student Hua Zhibing has also been heard by everyone.

In addition, he has also won the National Jieqing Award, Wang Xuan Outstanding Young Scholar, the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Beijing Invention Patent Award, the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Chinese and Engineering Intelligence Society, and the KDD'18 Outstanding Contribution Award.

Dr. Tieyan Liu, vice president of Microsoft Research Asia, who was also selected, now leads machine learning and interdisciplinary research at the institute.

Liu Tieyan graduated from the Department of Electronic Engineering of Tsinghua University, was elected IEEE Fellow in 2016, and is also an honorary professor of the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, an adjunct professor and doctoral supervisor of Tsinghua University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and other universities.

He is mainly engaged in research on machine learning algorithms and theories, as well as the application of machine learning in industry and science.
