The novel focuses on six-year-old Scout Finch, who lives with her eldest brother Jem Finch and her widowed father, atticus, a middle-aged lawyer. There are two rough main lines of the story, one is that the boy Dier comes to The Town of Macon to find his aunt for the summer vacation, and Jem and Scutter become friends with him. The three children were fascinated by their reclusive neighbor, named Arthur Radley, who was intimidating. The people of Maycombe were reluctant to talk about Radley, and no one had seen him many years later. The children used rumors to make up stories, speculate on the hidden mysteries behind them, and devise a plan to lure him out. Over the next two summers, the three children discovered that someone had left them small gifts in a tree outside Radley's house, but regrettably he never showed up in person.

Atticus was appointed by the court to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white teenage girl, Mayela Yuel. While many Maycombes objected, Atticus agreed to defend Tom, and some of the children mocked Jem and Scout for Atticus, calling their father "the guy who loves HG". Scout was even provoked to fight for her father's honor, who told him not to do so.

In court, Atticus confirmed that plaintiff Mayera and her alcoholic father, Bob Yuel, lied. Mayella offers to seduce Tom, and her father beats her up for it. Although Tom's innocence was obvious, the jury found him guilty. When desperate Tom escapes from prison and is killed, Jem and Atticus' belief in justice is devastated. Although Bob Yuell won, his reputation was discredited, and he angrily vowed revenge. Bob ripped Atticus' face on the street and tried to break into the trial judge's home to harass Tom Robinson's widow.

One night, when Jem and Scout were coming home from the school's Halloween extravaganza, Bob suddenly poisoned them. Jem's arm breaks during the fight, but in the confusion, a stranger rescues the children, and the mysterious man carries Jem home, and Scout recognizes him as Arthur Radley. The sheriff of Maycombe arrives and finds Bob Yuel dead in a fight. The sheriff debates with Atticus, trying to confirm who is responsible for both Jem and Bob. Atticus finally accepted the sheriff's point of view: Yuel had fallen to his knife. Radley asks Scout to send her home, and after saying goodbye, he disappears again. Standing outside Radley's door, Scout expressed deep regret that they could not repay their previous gifts.

Atticus was a very good father, and Sheriff Tate commented that he had a civilized and noble heart. Perhaps for many people, lawyers are a serious profession. But at home, he has always been a gentle father. He often talked equally, although he was only a six- or seven-year-old child, he was always willing to listen to the two children talk about their ideas, would read the newspaper to them, and would let the children develop freely, rather than necessarily wanting his daughter to be a lady, he would treat the black maids in the family equally, and tell the two children to be brave and kind in their own words and behavior.

In addition to criticizing the unfairness of racial discrimination, the book has also been telling the reader what is the integrity, demeanor and kindness of being a human being, he will not dismiss the black maid because of his children's words and two words, he will not give up justice because defending black people will be insulted, he tells the children that the grandmother with vicious words is a respectable person in a certain aspect, even if the darkness sometimes overcomes justice, he still insists on his own justice.

However, in modern society, can we do our own moral bottom line, in this era of staggered crossroads to carry on the upper and lower, for our next generation, establish a correct outlook on life, this is a special era, in the face of falling old people we dare not support, only by beauty, pseudo-bride can create wealth, children's dreams are no longer scientists, policemen, doctors, scientific and technological work is more important to paper and light production, the goodness, justice, bravery, portrayed in the hearts of children, my generation still need to work hard!
