Guangzhou's First Special Needs Cultural and Creative Exhibition Opened to Help "Realize" the Artistic Potential of Special Needs Youth

"Art is like a warm wool felt, bringing warmth and security to friends with special needs (special needs, including people with disabilities). Art is the most beautiful language, so that special needs friends can 'speak freely'. Art gives them courage and confidence. But art doesn't just exist for inspiration. "How to make art a means for disabled friends with artistic potential to become independent and self-reliant and integrate into society?" From January 15th to January 23rd, a special art exhibition, "Xin Horizon", was held at the Guangzhou Museum of Art, exhibiting the independent works of autistic youth who have undergone a long period of art training, as well as the paintings created by ordinary young designers and creators with special needs (including mental disabilities, physical disabilities, hearing impairments, etc.) with artistic potential, and the cultural and creative derivatives designed from them.

"The whole work process is actually a process of mutual stimulation"

In an interview with Nandu reporter, Teacher Dai Xiuzhen said, "We are involved in this project with 5 graduate students and 9 undergraduate students, who have formed a one-on-one creative team with the special needs youth participating in the project, and conduct joint creation courses at the agreed location every weekend. Before each class, we will discuss the direction of the creation of the course, collect information, and discuss the difficulties; after each class, we will also summarize immediately and adjust our working style according to the progress and status of the special needs students. It is in such a series of contacts, observations, exchanges, and discussions that our students have established a good interaction with the special needs students, and in the process have a new understanding of the special needs population, and at the same time have a new understanding of their social value as professional workers.
