The Brest Heroes Fortress is located on the southwestern border of Belarus. The Battle of brest Fortress was one of the most tragic battles of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union. In order to remember the heroism and fearless spirit of the fortress defenders, in 1965 the Supreme Soviet of the SOVIET Union decided to award the title of Hero of the Brest Fortress, becoming the only fortress in the Soviet Union to receive the title of Hero. For decades, local secondary school students in Brest took turns standing guard in front of the hero statue inside the fortress to commemorate the martyrs.
