On January 17, the US stock market was closed for one day due to the Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr

January 17 (Monday) is "Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Day", the US stock market will be closed for one day, January 18 (Tuesday) to resume normal trading.

In January 1986, U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed a decree designating the third Monday of January as Martin-Luther King Jr. Day in honor of the civil rights leader and making it a federal holiday. To date, there are only three instances in the United States where individual anniversaries are celebrated as an official holiday: Abraham Lincoln Memorial Day, George Washington Day (also known as President's Day) and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Day. King is the only person to date who is not the President of the United States to enjoy this honor, and the only African-American who has enjoyed this honor.

King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. On August 28, 1963, he gave his famous speech "I Have a Dream". Under the impetus of him and several civil rights leaders, the U.S. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, outlawing policies of racial segregation and racial discrimination. On April 4, 1968, King was leading a strike in Memphis, Tennessee, when he was shot in the throat by an Assassin on the balcony of a hotel, at the age of 39.
