In 1994, director Yuan Zhenyang made a film "Dharma Ancestor", which tells the legendary life of Dharma Ancestor.
Based on the experiences of Bodhidharma, a real Zen master in history, the film stars Hong Kong entertainers Er Dongsheng, Fan Shaohuang and Taiwanese artist Chen Songyong.
This film contains both The Dharma and the Zen Machine, and is a classic film through which you can learn about Buddhism.
The film tells the story in two lines, one line is the Dharma Ancestral Line, and the other line is the Shenguang Monk Line, and the Shenguang Monk is the later Zen Erzu Huike Master.

The story begins with Dharma Guru being the third prince of a southern Indian country, who got lost in the woods when he was young, met an old man and told him that he was him.
Dharma did not understand the old man's meaning, and at this time someone said that the king was seriously ill and told him to return to the palace.
On the way, he met the Assassins arranged by his eldest brother and second brother, and with his high martial arts, Dharma returned to his father.
At this time, the evil in the father king was not long after the death of the world, and at this time Dharma was enlightened by Panjradhara, believing that he was related to the Buddha, and left two sentences when he left: Who was I when I was born, and who I was when I was born.
What do these two sentences mean? This is actually talking about our own cognition, when we have not formed a sense of self, what kind of people are we? When we develop self-awareness on our own, are we really like what we think we are?
Dharma did not understand it at that time, so he went out of his house to worship Panjradoro as his teacher, and Panjradoro gave him the first task of building a self-study room.
So Dharma began to repair the self-study room, in the past he was a prince, enjoying the golden clothes and jade food, the servants brought him tea and water, and now he built his own self-study room when the wind ate and slept.
But when the self-study room was about to be built, it was either destroyed by others or destroyed by wind and rain, and finally he tried to build the self-study room.
But after it was built, he personally demolished the self-study room, which was actually a hidden Zen machine.
This means that the path of enlightenment does not necessarily have to limit oneself to a small space and be unaffected by external influences, but should be integrated with all things in the world and personally contact with enlightenment, rather than thinking in the narrow world of oneself, otherwise what one gets is one's own wishful thinking, not the essence of everything in the world.
Panjradhara took him under his wing, gave him the name Dharma, and told Dharma that he would not be able to preach the Dharma until 67 years after his death, and Aurora was China at that time.
67 years later, Dharma got up and crossed east to China, which was really the Liang Dynasty during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
At this time, a monk in a temple is always awakened by nightmares, because he has killed too much on the battlefield before, and his hands are stained with the blood of many people, so he always has nightmares.
By the time Dharma arrived in the Liang Dynasty, monks from all over the country had gathered in the royal monasteries to listen to Dharma explain the essentials of the Buddhist scriptures.
Dharma walked up to the pulpit without saying a word, then got up and left, saying that he had finished speaking.
The crowd looked at each other in disbelief.
There is actually a Zen machine here, so why doesn't Dharma say a word, but says that he has finished speaking?
Because the true Dharma is not in the scriptures, but in the hearts of the people, we will leave it to the end as to what the Dharma is.
Later, the monks of the monastery used lotus flowers and silt as a Zen machine to praise the holiness of the lotus flower and spit on the dirtiness of the silt.
But Dharma says that there is actually something to be desired for mud, not because it is dirty because of contempt.
In fact, there is a Zen machine here, which talks about the equality of all sentient beings, there is no distinction between high and low, and it is not necessary to change one's attitude towards sentient beings based on whose origin is noble and lowly.
Dharma then practiced meditation in the ashram with everyone else, and eventually everyone else was unable to meditate because of where his desires were, so Dharma practiced Buddhism by rubbing the table with tiles and making noise.
The people did not understand Dharma's meaning, so Dharma told everyone that Buddhas do not have a certain form, and the same is true of Zen, it is not sitting in meditation or lying in meditation to achieve enlightenment, and enlightenment lies in the mind, not in form.
Then the emperor summoned Dharma to the palace to meet him, and he thought that he had built many temples and repaired many scriptures, and considered that his merit was complete, so he boasted in front of Dharma, but Dharma said that Emperor Liangwu had no merit.
This angered the emperor, so the emperor expelled from the palace, and Dharma went north to prepare for northern Wei.
While crossing the river, he was stopped by the boatman and was not allowed to board the boat, and Dharma was not angry, but sat cross-legged at the ferry.
Shortly after the boat sailed, a child fell into the water, so Dharma crossed the river with a reed and rescued the child, who turned out to be the daughter of the boatman.
On the other hand, the monk of divine light was plagued by past killings all the time, so he forced himself to read Buddhist scriptures to resolve it, but with little effect.
Dharma came to a restaurant, where he took a short break, and met three monks, one of whom asked Dharma for advice on the "emptiness" of the Buddhist family, and Dharma knocked on the monk's head and asked him, Since everything is empty, why is it painful?
Leaving three sentences, "See what you can't see, listen to what you can't hear, and know what you don't know, is the true meaning."
Here is another incomprehensible plot, in fact, the Zen machine here is to let people not stick to the authority of the classics, do not feel that they can grasp everything under the world by understanding the classics, but should explore what has not yet been discovered and understood in the world.
Dharma came to the Shaolin Temple of the Northern Wei Dynasty, meditated in the cave behind it, sat for three years, did not eat or drink, and became a great spectacle of the Shaolin Temple.
This news reached the ears of the Southern Liang King, who sent southern Liang emissaries to invite Dharma.
But no matter what method they used, they could not move Dharma, so King Liang could only give up.
King Liang then invited the monk to ask him why, and told him the three questions he had spoken to Dharma.
The monk explained that the emperor had merit, but often put his merit on his lips to show off, that is, coveting merit, and once there was greed, good and evil were offset without merit.
The Buddha has no appearance, and the emperor asks if there is a Buddha, which means that the Buddha is not in the emperor's heart, and where is the Buddha?
The emperor asked Dharma who he was, and Dharma said that he did not know who he was, and that this was the true selflessness, always on the path of seeking the true self, and never satisfied with feeling that he had penetrated everything in the world.
After that, Dharma had been practicing in the cave for a long time, so he transformed into a rabbit to ignite the divine light.
Shenguang then embarked on the path of seeking the Dharma, and on the way, Shenguang met a woman incarnated by Dharma, and the two traveled together, and although Shenguang had desires for the woman, he eventually overcame the domination of desire.
In the bitter cold frost and snow, the divine light finally came to the mouth of the cave where Dharma meditated, and knelt in the ice and snow for three days.
Finally Dharma turned around and asked what the Divine Light was asking for?
The divine light said peace of mind.
Dharma replied that the heart had been settled for him.
There may be people here who don't understand, how can this be installed?
In fact, the three days in this ice and snow are actually three days of peace of mind, if the heart is impetuous and absent-minded, how can we resist the invasion of the cold, how can we achieve peace of mind? This is what Dharma said about the mind having been settled for him.
At this time, Dharma did not want to receive the divine light as a disciple, because the divine light may be a momentary impulse.
So Shen Guang cut off his left arm in order to seek the Dharma, and this is the origin of the broken arm seeking the Dharma.
Today we see that the left arm of the Shaolin monk's clothes is exposed, in fact, it is to commemorate the broken arm of Master Hui Ke to seek the Dharma.
In the end, Dharma received the divine light as a disciple and gave him the title huike.
Dharma's cultivation in the cave attracted many people to watch, brought incense money to the temple, and thus also attracted mountain thieves.
The mountain thief robbed the money and humiliated the temple abbot, and just happened to meet Dharma coming out of the cave, and all the monks knelt down to worship Dharma.
The mountain thief became angry and tried to kill Dharma, but was easily defused by Dharma. The leader of the mountain thieves was even more enraged and shot Dharma with a rocket.
Dharma sat cross-legged and did not avoid the rocket, allowing the fire to burn himself, and eventually the fire burned on Dharma.
The monks were called to sit around Dharma and recite the Sutras for him.
The mountain thief was also inspired, and no longer turned away for money. At this time, the sound of wooden fish came from the main hall, and it was Dharma who knocked on the wooden fish. The mountain thief was thoroughly transformed by it, put down the butcher's knife, and abandoned evil and followed good.
There are actually Zen machines here, so why does Dharma have an absolute superiority in force in front of the mountain thieves, but he would rather be shot by them with a rocket? This is the Dharma's emphasis on tempering a person, not by coercion and inducement, not by force to subdue, but by the heart, if you feel that killing me alone can make you reform yourself, abandon evil and follow good, then I am willing to be your sword ghost.
Many years later, Dharma Guru was also old, and he was ready to pass on his Zen mantle to his disciples, so he asked the four disciples, what did he learn from himself?
In response to the first three disciples, Dharma Guru thought that they only understood some shallow meanings.
Only Hui Ke was silent and prayed three times in front of Master Dharma, but Master Dharma thought that Hui Ke had mastered the Fa and passed on the mantle to him.
There may be some people here who have not understood, why did Hui Ke not say a word, but was taught the mantle?
Because this was the case when Dharma Guru asked for the Dharma, the Dharma is difficult to describe in words, it is not a sutra in the simple sense, but something that must be realized by the heart and practiced by the body. Those who know do not speak, and those who speak do not know.
Okay, so what exactly is Dharma?
We often say, "Don't climb the Three Treasures Hall without anything", but what are the Three Jewels in this temple?
The three jewels in this temple are: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
A Buddha is wisdom and enlightenment, and as long as you can comprehend the truth of life in the universe and realize the full wisdom and enlightenment, then you are a Buddha, so a Buddha is not a god, but a human being, which is the fundamental way that everyone can become a Buddha.
Laws are laws and laws, and everything in the universe, whether it is the material world or the spiritual world, has its own laws and essences, and these laws and essences are laws.
The Dharma is connected to those who have wisdom and enlightenment, who understand the laws and essence of all things in the universe, and can tell these laws to the world, which is the Dharma.
So, Buddha is a philosophical thought, a spiritual force, it is not a god, it cannot bless anyone, but it can guide you to think about your own life and the life of the universe.
When Master Dharma passed on the mantle to Hui Ke, he instructed him that one flower bloomed five leaves, and the result was natural, and after passing it on to the six ancestors, it should not be passed on again.
He told his disciples that there are many people who know, few people who practice the tao, many people who reason, few people who understand reason, and we should not despise those who are obsessed with not understanding, and anyone who has a bad thought will abandon evil and promote good.
Some people here may not understand it again, why did Dharma Guru ask his disciples to pass on only six ancestors and then not to pass them on again? Doesn't any doctrine hope that all eternity will never perish?
That's why Dharma Guru is the ancestor of Zen Buddhism, and his realm is not something that ordinary people can achieve.
The purpose of Dharma's teachings is to help the world attain enlightenment, not to become an immortal guru for himself.
He saw through human nature and knew that when the doctrine of Zen Buddhism was carried forward, there must be some people who would use this doctrine to amass wealth for themselves, under the banner of carrying forward Zen Buddhism, doing things for the sake of profit, deviating from the fundamentals of Zen Buddhism for the enlightenment of the world, so Dharma Guru said that after Zen Buddhism was passed on to the six ancestors, they should not pass it on again.
He also specifically said that he should not despise people who are obsessed with obstinacy, which actually has a deep meaning.
The obsessive person himself has strong willpower, there is a strong energy in the body, but there is no enlightenment, and once enlightened, the energy that this kind of person erupts is huge, and Zen Buddhism actually needs to guide these obsessive people to enlightenment.
Eventually Dharma Guru died at the age of one hundred and fifty, but in March after his death, someone met Dharma at Onion Ridge, hanging a shoe on his cane and going west.
The man reported to the emperor at the time, who ordered someone to dig up the tomb of Dharma's ancestors, and there was only one shoe in the coffin.
The interpretation here, I think, refers to the fact that Dharma Guru left his enlightenment in China.
Because Dharma Guru himself did not wear shoes, and when he returned, he did not wear shoes, but only hung shoes on his cane to walk. This shows that the shoe is actually symbolic, symbolizing that he came to China and left behind something that can help the world walk the world. Now he is going back to enlighten his people, so that they too can walk the world.
This is the storyline of the whole movie, there are many Zen machines during the period, and when you understand it, you feel very inspired.
Dharma Guru's cultivation is very high, which is difficult for ordinary people to understand, but he is practicing the Dharma, and he always regards himself as a person who is always on the path to becoming a Buddha, rather than thinking of himself as a Buddha.
This is obviously above everyone, but still leaning forward, thinking that the goal he wants to achieve is still far from him, and he needs to pursue it for a lifetime, which is an understanding that is difficult for mortals to reach.
Dharma Guru taught people to explore everything in the world on their own, to use their hearts to enlighten the path, rather than just sticking to the Buddhist scriptures.
