Mercedes' relationship with F1 is controversial in the 2021 season title race. The title battle between Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen continued until the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with both drivers making it to the finishing match with the same number of points.

Hamilton controlled most of the race, but Nicholas Latifi's crash late in the race triggered the safety car, and Verstappen took the opportunity to enter the station to change into a soft tire, keeping it in P2. The formation was crowded behind the safety cars, but there were several snare cars among the title contenders. Initially, race director Michael Massy decided to untie the snared car before the race resumed, but, as Red Bull and Mercedes sent him a message over the radio, he made the controversial decision to allow only the snare between Verstappen and Hamilton to overtake the safety car, which seemed to violate the rules of the sport. The race resumed with one lap left and Verstappen overtook at Turn 5 to win the world championship for the first time.

Mercedes lost two post-match protests and eventually dropped an appeal, but Wolf boycotted the FIA's awards gala alongside Mercedes' chief technology officer James Allison, and Hamilton also did not attend the ceremony where he was asked to claim the P2 trophy, part of his silence since Abu Dhabi.

Ben Surayem, who succeeded Jean Todd as FIA president, is also waiting for Hamilton to respond to his message, with rumours swirling that Hamilton may not make a comeback in the 2022 season.

Bin Surayem will have the opportunity to meet with Wolff on Friday, with the Abu Dhabi incident at their top of their agenda. An investigation into the use of sporting rules at the end of the season is ongoing, but the final report will not be submitted until March 18, the free practice day of the 2022 season opener bahrain Grand Prix.
