FiA will increase its inspection of the rear wing in the 2022 season

After a season with a lot of controversy over the rear, the FIA is taking steps to further improve the rear test in 2022.

FiA will increase its inspection of the rear wing in the 2022 season

With Mercedes and Red Bull locked in a stalemate in last year's title battle, both teams have accused each other of using illegal accessories, with wings being the main focus. While Mercedes questioned Red Bull's front wing at the start of the season, causing Red Bull and several other teams to have to replace their front wing, late in the season Red Bull questioned Mercedes' rear wing. Red Bull Racing team leader Christian Horner told the media that the advantage that Mercedes' rear wing gives them is "hidden in the way it works".

He added that Mercedes' performance was "exponentially up", saying: "I think it's clearly related to us and that's why Adrian (Newway) and Paul (chief engineer Monaghan) have been discussing the matter with the FIA." He even showed photographs of Mercedes's tail and pointed out traces of what he believed were illegal means.

In response, the FIA has launched a new tail-wing test that was used for the first time at the Qatar Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season. While the FIA hasn't found anything wrong with Mercedes' rear wing, F1 single-seater head Nicolas TomBaches said they would increase detection of the rear wing in the 2022 season.

Tombazis said: "In Qatar, there was no cat grease, we didn't find anything worrying, it was a good test but it could be improved and we are thinking about some improvements to it in the 2022 season. ”

One area of improvement the FIA is considering is how to apply a force force on the main plane of the tail in order to expose any potential tricks.
