F1 will prevent team leaders from contacting the FIA in the middle of the race

Ross Brown said F1 plans to "stop" the team leader from talking to the race director during next season's Grand Prix.

Radio talks became a feature of the 2021 season, most notably in Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, where three of the last four games of the season were played. In the first two races, Mercedes and Red Bull Racing staff defended Michael Massey over the track rivalry between world title contenders Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. It also happened in Abu Dhabi, when the two almost touched each other on the first lap and Hamilton took the lead on the first lap, running to the buffer zone to avoid contact with Verstappen and returning to the track with a bigger advantage.

Red Bull Racing sport chief Jonathan Whitley thought Hamilton should give up the position, but Marcy disagreed. Ultimately, a more important discussion revolves around the procedures for deploying safety vehicles. Mercedes manager Toto Wolff urged Massy not to get out of the safety car, but the request failed, while Red Bull team leader Christian Horner also communicated with Massey over the radio, hoping to restart the race, give Verstappen a chance to overtake Hamilton, and ask the trap car to have a chance to unwind on its own. The Austrians then urged Massy to decide the outcome of the race with the final lap behind the safety car, after which Mercedes protested but without success and they must formally appeal by Thursday.

Ross Brown, who is F1's general manager, is unhappy with the team manager's attempts to put pressure on Massy and wants to block that communication channel in 2022.
