Sony recently announced the top ten of the 2021 PSVR game download list. There's no doubt that Beat Saber and Job Simulator are once again the top two most downloaded games on PSVR in 2021.
It is understood that Owlchemy Labs' "Job Simulator", as one of the most advanced room-scale games in VR, has never dropped to fifth place in North America, possibly thanks to its casual game style that is friendly to VR novices. And Beat Saber has been torn between number one and number two since it was released on PSVR in 2018.
The 2021 PSVR Game Downloads Chart showcases PS4, PS5 and PSVR downloads for all of 2021, with content spread across North America and Europe. Note: The following list represents paid downloads only and does not include physical disc sales, DLC, or free games.
As the chart shows, there is a lot of overlap in the rankings of the EU and North America, with ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission and The Walking Dead Onslaught making it into the top 10 of their respective regions.
This year's list is also surprisingly close to last year's, with speculation that most of the top 10 are basically standard must-have games, and that this has been going on for several years. This may expose the relative stagnation of the PSVR platform and may point to good user appeal but poor user retention. In addition to that, most PSVR hardware bundles are hard to find in stores or online, so it's reasonable to think that a handful of newcomers throughout the year drive content sales.
Regardless, Sony is preparing to release its next-generation PSVR 2 headset for the PS5, possibly around the end of the year, and the company seems to have ushered in a new era of console VR gaming.
