Like all large surnames, Chen's origins are more complicated.
One was a descendant of Emperor Shun, with Guo as his surname. After King Wu of Zhou destroyed the Shang and established the Zhou Dynasty, he sealed Shun's descendant Concubine Man at Chen (present-day Huaiyang County, Henan Province) and established the State of Chen. Some of the descendants of Concubine Man took guo as their surname, and these people became the origin of the Chen surname.
There is also another one, and the most important one of the Chen surnames, after Tian Zhen, the prince of the State of Qi. Qi Guotian's original surname was Chen, and after Qin destroyed Qi, Tian Zhen ran to the Chu state and changed back to the Chen surname.

In 669, the Tang Dynasty sent Chen Zheng, a native of Hedong, to serve as the commander-in-chief of the Lingnan March and led troops to suppress the rebellion of ethnic minorities in southern Fujian. In 677, Chen Zheng died, and his son Chen Yuanguang, who was only 20 years old at the time, continued to quell the rebellion with his father, fought for nine years, and finally put down the rebellion in 686, submitted to the imperial court for approval, and established an administrative division of Zhangzhou Commandery (漳州郡, in present-day Zhangzhou, Fujian). The administrative division established by Chen Yuanguang was too important, so he had a title called "Kaizhang Shengwang", and his descendants were called the Kaizhang Shengwang Sect of the Chen clan. This school is very important and has become the main ancestor of the Chen surnames in Fujian, Guangdong, Taiwan and Nanyang.

In the middle of the Tang Dynasty, there was a man named Chen Boxan who toured Lushan with friends, and when he went to Lushan to see it, he felt that the local scenery was very beautiful, so he led his descendants to move to Yongqing Village, Leli, the mayor of Taiping Township, De'an County, Jiangzhou. Jiangzhou is today's Jiujiang, and De'an is located in the south of Jiangzhou, so this branch is called Jiangzhou Chen. Who does it? Bao Zheng Bao Qingtian. After the Yimen Chen clan was separated this time, it was diverted to today's Jiangxi, Henan, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian, Shandong, Shanghai, Tianjin and other places, a total of 16 provinces, 125 counties, and 291 villages.
