After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Chen Tiaoyuan served as the president of the Military Senate of the Military Commission, responsible for the return of the Kuomintang wounded.
What no one expected was that just a few years later, when Chen Tiaoyuan went to the northwest for a tour in 1943, he suddenly suffered from throat cancer in Lanzhou and returned to Chongqing for treatment. On December 18, Chen Tiaoyuan died of illness in Chongqing at the age of 58 due to ineffective treatment for laryngeal cancer.
On February 2, 1944, the Nationalist government posthumously promoted Chen Tiaoyuan to the rank of general of the army.
